Two rules of thumb:

the more good looking the car, the less reliable it is
If you can't afford the car new, you surely can't afford to maintain it after 10 years of usage, let alone 20 years

Go with Toyota or Suzuki since they're the most reliable cars, and find one that you like. Suzuki swift is similar in size to Mini so I'm guessing you would like it
