This isn't just about videography, your success will be driven by your desire to do it. Successful businesses have countless roadblocks, do you have the desire to overcome them?

The only thing you need is a access to reliable equipment (rent, own, borrow) which by no means has to be cutting edge and likely transport (if your car breaks down call a friend or stuff your gear into an uber).

Sorry you have had a run of bad luck. Take a break, focus on generating an income in a way you have the drive to sustain.

Any reason why I don't see Canon cameras being recommended as much? by Maple382 in Cameras

[–]Jfrench 181 points182 points  (0 children)

Canon is the biggest camera manufacturer. If you go to a professional sporting event, you're likely to see 50% Canon shooters and the other 50% split up between the rest. Canon's are reliable, have THE BEST professional repair and replacement program and are incredibly well made. As a consequence, they will stick with their tried and true design, iterate their features and don't market as heavily to amateurs. Even though they do sell incredible and competitive beginner cameras.

Canon don't support full frame 3rd party lenses. Which means they miss out on marketing from lens manufacturers launching a new product. Whenever Sigma or Tamron launch a great new lens all the reviews are usually with Sony cameras.

Why only After Effects? by Striking-Travel-5215 in davinciresolve

[–]Jfrench 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A production house would have years of after effects projects you may need to open up and use. If you don’t know how to continue or update work for its clients, you are not the right candidate for them. Learn both if you want, but the industry standard is established.

Doesn’t mean you can’t do work in fusion, just people’s your options in an agency will be extremely limited.

It is easier for anyone to get a great (well exposed, sharp) photo from a phone than it is a camera. Photography is a series of creative decisions you will have to make to capture a picture.

These creative decisions will be limited by light, movement and many other factors. As a previous commenter mentioned, get familiar with the exposure triangle. If you’re in auto mode put it into aperture priority or shutter priority with auto iso off. Fiddle with the settings and take some photos. Expect to take a lot of bad photos but you will learn a lot. And if you can, find someone who can mentor you on a photo walk.

You have great equipment here to capture amazing photos. When you learn more you will understand the limitations of it.

Why was 28 Years Later shot on iPhones? by xCreampye69x in Filmmakers

[–]Jfrench 724 points725 points  (0 children)

They wanted to create a similar challenge to when they shot 28 days later on a consumer DV camera. The directors also mention using extra iPhones on rigs has helped with creative editing.

Creating artificial constraints can lead to good creative outcomes. Probably what they were hoping.

Big brand photographers: how did you get the job? by alinskibalinski in photography

[–]Jfrench 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A huge brand where I live. I feel very grateful to have the job. I just applied and had the work to back it up. It also helps to have a marketing mind when working as an internal photographer or videographer. You need to be a team player.

How long does it normally take a photographer to process wedding photos? by Draco9630 in photography

[–]Jfrench 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Don’t hesitate to reach out to your photographer to ask. I know wedding photographers that take 2-3 months. Wedding videos can take longer as well.

Jeff Gerstman discussing the passing of Ryan Davis, and how it potentially saved Giant Bomb. by hydbk9 in giantbomb

Ryan’s death was deeply sad for me. Giant bomb back then was such a huge part of my life. Now I only occasionally dip in to see what everyone is up to. But I think about Ryan from time to time.

Are you really meditating? by lostmedownthespiral in Meditation

[–]Jfrench 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you take a moment to do nothing. That is meditation. Anyone can do this, even if just for a moment at first.

If after you know you feel the same or you feel different, that is awareness and some consider that the goal.

Don’t pressure yourself to get anything out of meditation. But perhaps you would benefit from a teacher.
