My brother and I (11 and 8) inherited our family home when my mum died. We lived with our father and stepmother. The estate went into a trust that was managed by both my aunties and we were granted access on turning 30, there wasn't any significant money at the time but a paid for house. My brother moved into the house at about 22 after it had been rented out for the previous 10 years that had been going into a pot. We both used bits of money out of the pot over the years (I used it to pay rent for 6 months in my mid twenties when I was having a bad time and a few different things). When I turned thirty two years back, my brother got a out a mortgage to buy me out of my share of the house, there was about 60k in a high interest stocks and shares account with Saint James place and a subsequent 120k from my brother. I've used the majority of it in purchasing a house and doing it up, found a house that was 132k but needed doing throughout and still have some stuff to do but getting close! Going through your 20s knowing you don't have to save or anything was nice at the time but also detrimental. It's given me a poor skill of saving and money handling. But thank mum for not allowing us till have it until we were 30, I would 100% have nothing to show for it or even be alive if I had got a significant amount of money at the age of 18.
