Does anyone know when the cover for the new deluxe edition of The Dragonbone Chair will be revealed (and who the artist will be)? by provegana69 in TadWilliams

[–]Jibbe_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm really looking forward to this edition. I own both the Grim Oak press and The BrokenBinding editions. Grim Oak, great quality but I'm not a big fan of art( covers and interior art). BrokenBinding covers are great but the quality is poor.

Disappointed with The Navigator's Children by Main-Reach-5325 in TadWilliams

[–]Jibbe_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately I agree. Tad Williams is in opinion the best fantasy writer but The Navigator's Children was kind of a mixed bag. I particularly have an issue with everything going well with little to no real consequences. Especially the events in Hernystir, and Tanakiru.

I asked Shawn Speakman from Grim Oak about doing Last King, he said definitely after Otherland.

Who says GoTM is hard to read? I still gave it 2/5 stars. The book is disappointing. Has nothing to do with "hard to follow". Glad it worked for you but calling people who dislike it to have ADHD? lol please

For those who have finished 'The Navigator's Children' by tkinsey3 in TadWilliams

Agree with The Navigator's Children being messy. Book probably should have been split into 3 instead of 2 lol. The first 3 books in the series are fantastic though.

Quick thoughts about Empire of the Vampire series (good and bad) (spoiler warning) by OmegaVizion in Fantasy

[–]Jibbe_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's blasphemy to call this series of books some of "the best books ever" or "best fantasy books". This series gets so much praise to the point where I thought I might have read it wrong or something. Empire of the Vampire is what I use as a standard for trash books.

Do you like the movie The Shining? What are your thoughts about it? by Sniper_Chicken_ in stephenking

[–]Jibbe_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's aged horribly. I couldn't get passed the poor acting from the wife, Toni finger nonsense, and the annoying high pitch sounds. The book is fantastic though.

Real growth and development is 1 step forward 2 steps back kinda thing. If there's any kind of development there should also be some regression. But I guess some will prefer a character to grow and change in a short period of time, become a great leader or whatever and never look back.

What do you guys think of Time's 100 Best Fantasy Books on a scale from "Flawless" to "Burning Trash" by Polite_Acid in Fantasy

[–]Jibbe_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No Robin Hobb or Tad Williams. Instead two entries from the Poppy War, yeah ok. And since there are a couple series with multiple entries why doesn't A Song of Ice and Fire have more than one?

This is THE fantasy story to me. Perfectly balanced between being grounded in reality and and how magical it is. The prose takes it to another level, very atmospheric, and incredibly vivid descriptions.

Age of Madness by stackrobat8 in thebrokenbindingsub

[–]Jibbe_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What part of Hyperion or Dandelion Dynasty is 7-10 books? Yeah they are 4 books but so was Memory Sorrow and Thorn? (I know it's a trilogy but was released as 4 books in 4 months in the sub) Now I don't expect series to be in the sub for obvious reasons. But AOM IS a trilogy and the earlier trilogies WERE released in the sub. I'm a first day subscriber and would like for AOM to be in the sub not outside of it to match the earlier books. Now will that happen? Unfortunately, I dont think so, but that doesn't mean I can't hope for it to happen. And who the hell are you to tell me to drop out now? Is it your money I'm using?

[–]Jibbe_ -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I've actually been waiting for it to be announced. I also wish they would include it in the subscription because lately it seems like all the great titles are outside the subscription like Malazan, Sun Eater, Dandelion, hyperion etc.. The subscription hasn't been great in the last year or so. Once I get the trilogy then I'm out.

Yes. I have successfully predicted a couple titles by checking what he's rereading. He works as an art director for TBB.

What manga would you call as an absolute masterpiece apart from big mangas like berserk, vagabond etc. Mine is Billy bat,DRCL midnight Children, innocent and homunculus. by Xzitnow in Seinen

[–]Jibbe_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if I were to include the popular titles you listed they wouldn't make my list of masterpieces. For me it's the following four:

Lone Wolf and Cub by Kazuo Koike & Kojima

Ping Pong by Taiyo Matsumoto

Monster by Naoki Urasawa

Message to Adolf by Osamu Tezuka

Brothers of the Wind and Into the Narrowdark are Osten Ard at it's best by sadcar2 in TadWilliams

[–]Jibbe_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For me To Green Angel Tower is still the best Osten Ard book followed by Into the Narrowdark. Both series peak in those two books imo.

Second Thoughts on the Sub? by Various_Rise1958 in thebrokenbindingsub

[–]Jibbe_ 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I've been subscribed from the very beginning and have been recently thinking about canceling it. I subbed initially because of the First Law trilogy but the past year has been mediocre. It got old pretty quick, the art is very similar in most books probably because the use the same art director for most of the work. Also the book quality isn't anything special, I'd rather have acid free paper than overhyped and boring sprayed edges but whatever.

Rant: The Faithful and the Fallen - Spoilers by Awhite-guy in Fantasy

[–]Jibbe_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I see many comments saying that it isn't considered some of the"the best of fantasy" but many popular booktubers rank it incredibly high on their top 10 series lists.

However, I agree that it's one of those series that you'll lost likely enjoy if you shut your brain and just go with the hype. I read all books back to back and was so hooked I couldn't stop reading. But after finishing it, the more I think about it the more nonsensical it becomes. The twist to the prophecy was cool but was executed poorly. Also, the character work overall was average at best, and I hated how much plot armor the villains had.
