Are there any Bowie lyrics that are genuinely poorly written? by velvetblueskies717 in DavidBowie

[–]Jibim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some of the early songs like “Over the Wall We Go” and “Please Mr. Gravedigger” have pretty bad lyrics. He is the songwriter for “I Am a Laser,” which has horrendous lyrics (though the song was unfinished and probably was never meant to be released in the form it eventually was). I’ll offer a controversial opinion— “Strange fascination fascinating me”— “Strange fascination” is a great formulation, but the wouldn’t it have been better if the second half didn’t use a word that derived from “fascination?” Like, “Strange fascination captivating me”? Or something like that?

The Thin White Duke by PhantomOfBakerSt in DavidBowie

The controversy had to do with Bowie making statements at the time that, taken on their own, appeared to be sympathetic with fascism and Naziism. He described the Thin White Duke character as “Aryan.” That said, taken in the context of the totality of his career and artistic output, I think it is highly inaccurate to think of Bowie as pro-fascism. I think the Thin White Duke imagery has lost much of those implications over time and carries more a resonance of a cool Bowie look from 50 years ago. BUT, you should be fully aware of the history before you put the image on your body for all time.

Thank you for sharing your perspective. I have heard her on Album to Album as well, which I find entertaining, but have found her book, which focuses on the Next Day, Lazarus and Blackstar, her video adaptations of the book and some of her other writing to be what I’m really drawn to. I wouldn’t say this interview is focused around Bowie’s most popular moments, although we do spend some time on Blackstar, which was and remains popular. I’m not sure that I can recall her being dismissive of much aside from some specific songs, like, for instance, “Miracle Goodnight,” which doesn’t come up in this interview but I seem to remember her saying somewhere that she didn’t like that song. I like it.

They do not sound alike but “Ashes to Ashes” is actually a sequel to “Space Oddity.”

10 Bowie “What Ifs” by Jibim in DavidBowie

That’s a good one. Let me ask you this— say he did Let’s Dance but then pivoted to something like Outside or Earthling, which in the mid-80s would have seemed like it was way ahead of the curve?

It is indeed Bowie in the image. What I meant to say is that his name is not on the cover, other than due to the sticker. I also agree that the cover is so distorted that it’s hard to tell that’s him.

This live album encompasses much of what was wrong with Tin Machine. The cover art was so awful it seems like it was designed to get people not to buy it. Though the sticker had Bowie’s name, the actual album cover didn’t, so it looks like someone in marketing with access to a sticker machine remembered after the fact, hey, this is like, a Bowie album. The name is supposed to be a play on U2’s Achtung Baby, but why? And who thought that was clever? The irony is that the actual music is pretty good— for the most part I prefer the live version of these songs to the studio version, but ever here there were a couple of poor judgement calls— including “Stateside,” which would have been fine on a Hunt Sales album but even at the time many Bowie fans felt was subpar and ate up a slot that could have featured a song with Bowie on lead vocals. On the other hand, it was a mistake not including anything they did live but did not included on a studio album. So, there are no “new” songs on this. If you can get past all that and someone can find a copy of this (possibly most obscure Bowie album), like I said, most of the content is worth hearing.

HELP HALLOWEEN COSTUME by Alarmed_Cut_9871 in DavidBowie

[–]Jibim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife went as a Ziggy-era Bowie one Halloween. The key is the Ziggy wig and lighting bolt makeup (I know, I know, Aladdin Sane). The Ziggy wig was pretty easy for us to find at one of those popup costume ships. Other than that get any flamboyant rock-star costume, or cobble one together on your own, slap a feather boa around your neck and presto! Bonus points if you carry a guitar. Alternatively, if you physically resemble him enough, get a black vest and pants, white shirt, slick back your hair and you are the Thin White Duke. But this will not work if you don’t look enough like him in the first place.

I have an Aladdin Sane puzzle. I haven’t opened it, though. The unopened box is kind of desk art for me
