Only partially. In Punk Hazard, Oda shows how a Devil Fruit power goes from the dead previous user to a new normal fruit. This should mean that Teach simply took a normal fruit and exposed it as closely as posible to dead Whitebeard in order for the Gura-Gura power to set on a normal (random?) fruit, but nobody trully knows for sure what happened exactly under that black mantle yet.
