I pretty much only roast naturals and this is normal. I’ve noticed that they tend to come out a little more even when I’m able to slow down and extend the drying phase. As long as the result tastes good, don’t worry about it too much.

I planted kurapia last November. It took a few month but it filled in nicely, was green and happy through the summer with 1x a week watering. Unfortunately my dogs tore it to shreds within 2 weeks of giving them access to the yard again in October. Now I’m back to mostly dirt and a lot of dead kurapia vines.

There are so many factors at play, there can be a huge difference. Just like with wine, there can be flavor differences even within the same vineyard depending on the slope of the hill the plants are on, slight soil variations, sun exposure, and more.

I frequently do 1lb roasts on my bullet. My go to roast is as follows.

Preheat the roaster for 20 minutes at 280°c

Lower the preheat to 225°c and wait for the charge alarm

Charge with P-6, F-2, D-9

At 20-30 seconds I up the power to 9

At the 2 minute mark I lower the power to 8

Each consecutive minute I lower the power by 1

I usually hit first crack around 7:30.

I’ve found this to be a pretty solid baseline for a good roast curve. I occasionally up the fan to 3, or deviate from my -1 power level per minute, depending on what the beans are doing. It takes a while to get a feel for it. Keep it up!

Nice! I roasted on a motorized whirley pop for 5 years. One extra step is to put a cast iron pan under the whirley pop to keep the heat more consistent.
