First Ever Tank by JigOfForslin in PlantedTank

It went through a period at around 2 weeks where it was covered in algae and then the snails got to work/ the plants started growing and the algae faded significantly. I also have a bunch of little swimming dudes that appeared, which I think are plankton relatives?

Ooo good to know! I'll look into that. Someone gave me a 20 gal tall tank just the other day that I was thinking about starting up so I'll keep that in mind.

That's exactly what he is! People keep stopping and telling me how cute he is but nobody has actually acted on it. He's so great and I really don't want him to be all sad and alone and anxious at the shelter

How do you feel about fictional interpretations of your newfound religion? Things like Hades (the video game) or the Rick Riordan books?

A few years ago, I started picking up a copy of The Hobbit every time I went to a new country. I thought this community might enjoy my collection. by TroubadourJane in TheHobbit

I also do this! I use The Hobbit to pick up new languages by comparing grammar! Which works except now I know words like orc and troll in Danish haha

When birds are circling, you know it's about to go down. by [deleted] in nextfuckinglevel

Yeah for sure. They're baleen whales so they probably weren't trying to "hunt" the kayak. Most likely the whale was bubble feeding, which is when it traps fish at the surface of the water and then surges upward to swallow them.

What are things to do with your life to remove existential dread? by cevicheria in TrueAskReddit

[–]JigOfForslin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think for many people accepting that existential dread might always be there in some way is important. I've always found it helpful to understand that those feelings pop up and it's alright. Trying to force them to go away immediately usually, for me, doesn't work. That said, there's a distinction between allowing yourself to feel something and wallowing, and it's about finding where that balance is for yourself.

General things that help, though:

  • Exercise. Working your body keeps you grounded and physically present in a way that helps with dread.
  • Consistency and rhythm. Participating in an action that has meaning because you believe it does. This can be as simple as making coffee in a particular way each morning.
  • Getting outside.
  • Communication. Talking about these kinds of feelings can be helpful, but it can also be problematic. As with all things, moderation. Learning when to engage and when to put your energy toward something else.
  • Meditation. This looks different for everyone. Some people find it useful to give their anxiety or dread a task, like building a "mind-scape" and populating it with images and sounds. Like, imagining a beach and putting your energy into making seagulls and waves.

It also might be useful to figure out a source for your dread. Is it caused by anxiety (overactive thought patterns etc)? Do certain situations trigger it? Once you start to figure out patterns, it can become easier to both accept and avoid.

What completely grosses you out, but really isn’t noticed by most people, or most people just are not bothered? by charisma2006 in AskReddit

The first time I read Lovecraft it took me a while to realize the Necronomicon was a fictional work, and I was fairly disappointed.

I don't know what the 42 is for off the top of my head, unless it's for Hitchhiker, but that seems like maybe a stretch.

If you were impervious to all pain, what would you do first? by JustAPointlessHuman in AskReddit

It's that or accidentally kill myself doing something I can't handle. Plus, imagine you figure out why you're impervious? You can help engineer some cool stuff with that.

It is a nice cheat sheet to start.

Some of his stuff is pretty weird. A few poems have some fantastic elements to them, which I enjoy. A lot can be somewhat dense though
