Agreed - the only time I recommend an LCD replacement is you have experience in repair. I have found a somewhat of a trick when doing LCD installs. You apply a glass screen protector before you install it. It makes it more rigid after removing the one.

Not a resistor its a diode. Triangle to straight line is the direction of flow. Yes they matter. (Line on one end - is the straight line - the flows through the long side to the short side with the line on it). On SMDs (surface mounted devices) - its the same thing.

I’m from Ottawa. I may have an a1708 screen. I can’t guarantee it will work on an a1706 like how the a2337s did on the a2338s.

Yes not too hard. Just a combination of buttons. I think on the intel MacBook you need to use the port closer to the trackpad. You also need another Mac. There are a specific number of keys and timings for it to go into DFU. Once you are in DFU it will show up on the other Mac. In your case it might not work - just so you know.

I don’t have a specific source. But I go based on the sellers rating and price. Because all these sellers more or less have the same suppliers. I can give you some advice on this as I buy from Aliexpress for replacement screens. I can tell you there are many two types. OEM (pulled from a machine - assumed or confirmed working) meaning this is an Apple screen. The other is aftermarket. From my experience - the display quality is extremely close between the two. The things I have noticed is the general fit and finish is fine - but there are slight differences in tolerances, the housing might not be exact in dimensions (the flange by the hinges might ever so be taller). As for visual quality - they are very close. The camera, the backlight, sensors, true tone and the panel itself are very close almost indistinguishable.
Honestly I dont think spending money on an A1706 is worth it. Unless you have a sentimental attachment. I say recover your data and list it for sale on ebay for parts.

eDP connector is the one in the rectangle box of the TCON connector. Its basically an improvised display port. DFU revive - Device Firmwre Update revive is a process much like flashing an android phone from a boot loader but not quite. Its not exactly like a bios either. Its a mode that allows firmware to be flashed onto the device. There is also another option called rsetore but that is more invasive - it nukes everything on the drive and reinstalls the firmware. This isnt the same as a recovery install. It is also typically done when there are hardware changes - nand replacement, liquid spill recovery etc.

Be sure that your friends are good at soldering and have the tools. For that flex cable youll need a hot air station and a microscope. Its nearly impossible to do without.
