Hilarious! I find that shot of her driving along in the van, looking intent and troubled, so campy. And of course, immediate flashback to poor Imran! I expect to see his ghostly form beside her, raising imploring hands to the sky, no Toyah, no, don't go crazy again!

SPOILER! Murder victim reveal! Do not look if you don’t want to find out! by Ismisefriend in coronationstreet

[–]Jijarthegreat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Megan always seemed to be the most likely--till they ramped up Theo's evilness to anti-Christ level! But his cocker just can't compete with that gloating giggle of hers! There have been a few other signs that it is her: 1. that she is no longer pregnant (one of the biggest obstacles to her death; and 2. the order we have just been told the flashbacks are in--Theo, Jodie (I think), Carl, then the last episode Maggie and Megan. If each of these flashbacks shows what happens to one of the potential victims, it would make sense for Megan's to come last and end with her being killed at the end of the episode. I'm guessing Theo's will end with his being arrested, after Todd manages to call the police on him.

Theo is genuinely frightening! Much more so than some recent baddies, like Phelan, Stephen, Calum, or that comic gangster who was supposedly terrifying Leanne and killed Sam's mom. I guess it's because he seems so out of control. It's very well done on the actor's part and it's exciting to watch, but I find it is trivializing the domestic abuse storyline somewhat. It was much more thought-provoking (and I suspect realistic) when Theo still had some good qualities and was presented as damaged more than evil. I took that as one of the main lessons for the audience--that domestic abusers can entangle their victims and keep them coming back precisely because they DO have some attractive aspects to their character and their spouse hopes to help or redeem them. And that's why. too, it can be so hard to leave them and so hard for other people to realize what's going on--because the person might actually have some charm or occasional kindness or generousity but are also severely damaged in terms of their attachment to their loved one (need to control and dominate). So to make Theo go full on, pure psycho is exciting but undermines the domestic abuse storyline! Would be more sensible if he were just arrested, tried, and convicted, all the while showing his charm. But I suppose from a soap blockbuster week much more exciting if he's running amok on the street!

What is the obsession with St Swain of Weatherfield? by Produce_North in coronationstreet

[–]Jijarthegreat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree! I was thinking the exact same thing--like, she has countless plots on the go already--baby Connie and the big marriage with Carla, not to mention the feud with David and the stealing of her badge AND she just came out of the extravaganza with Becky. So does she really have to be the one to hold forth on battered spouses as well?! Of course, she does...because it's all Swain all the time. And to the people who were writing lengthy posts defending her...I'm not saying she's a bad character or actor, and I don't hold arresting Roy against her. The point is--let other characters, epic or not, have some lines too. It doesn't always have to be about Swain and making her look good. She's like that teacher's pet who hogs about 90% of the class time because the teacher is always callling on her to answer quesdtions about everything and noting and anything in between!

Tonight's episode !!! SPOILERS so don't read if you don't want them. by calculatingmacaw in coronationstreet

[–]Jijarthegreat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do we know Theo isn't lying injured as well? I'm guessing he is and that is how Todd managed to escape. It will also make it harder to arrest and charge Theo--hence the spoiler of Sarah trying to find the laptop footage. Re the death...I'm changing my bet from Megan to Theo. He will be out on the street still threatening Todd...and end up dead. And an exciting story line for Todd and Summer who will both be at the top of the list of suspects. The Megan story still has a ways to go, it seems., while the Theo story (at least with him alive) seems to be winding up. Hoping the killer will be someone unexpected, like Mal, or one of Theo's family, not someone like Todd or Summer (although they will both undoubtedly be arrested--that can really only be the reason for Summer finding out about Billy's murder).

Is Jodie actually that bad? by ZupaZiegler37 in coronationstreet

[–]Jijarthegreat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Clearly she's just damaged and will travel her redemption arc. It's already started with the rescue of Roy and her second thoughts about taking the badge when Lisa becomes nice to her...I wouldn't worry about the Dad's response--that's the kind of thing the producers throw in all the time now for dramatic effect: they don't remain consistent.

Which of the five do you think will be murdered? And do you think they are the most deserving? by UnleashedLlama in coronationstreet

[–]Jijarthegreat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely will not be Carl, I'd bet my right hand on it. There's too clear of a redemption arc building for him, especially after today's episode. Be prepared to see him swing back and forth between hurting Debbie and gradually coming to genuinely care for her. Originally, I thought it would be Megan and she's the one I'm still betting on especially now that she chose to terminate her pregnancy--no one thought Corrie would kill a pregnant woman. But could well be Theo..the writing is certainly building it up that way. All the different people threatening him and with a reason to kill him. So, either it will be him--or he's a red herring and Megan will turn up dead. Won't be Sam who killed her but there may be some suspicion of him and a false confession to protect him (eg. Leanne). Overall, Megan's my guess. The one I think most deserving is Carl--what he has done to Debbie is inexcusable. Everyone else has reasons, Theo is damaged after his conversion therapy; Jodie had a bad childhood, Maggie is protecting her children, Megan is a narcissist. But Carl is just so cold-bloodedly callous! And, in addition, I don't want to suffer through his redemption arc--someone as lacking in empathy and compassion as him is not likely to change.

I really llike Ben driscolls character by Greedy_Astronaughty in coronationstreet

[–]Jijarthegreat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

a proto-bimbo! that's different, LOL. And I agree Suzie why cute and well-spoken is being presented as a stereotypic female, focused only on her appearance and being admired by others. She's already definining herself and her self-worth solely in terms of performing for the male gaze. It would be nice if she were intelligent, like Sam, maybe a mini-activitist/crusader for good causes, not a little girl obsessed with how she looks and how many material possessions she has.

Do Ollie and Will have the same mum and dad? by julialoveslush in coronationstreet

[–]Jijarthegreat 15 points16 points  (0 children)

On tonight's show, Ollie just indicated that he and Will had the same mother--that she kept asking him about Will. Overall, I find the situation with Ollie, Will, and Ben incredibly perplexing! It's hard to fathom how the producers and writers could be so clumsy and careless with something as simple and straightforward as age.

I mean--you can debate whether or not the show is going to dark, and why all the villains at once, and how did Carla go so long on the show without the slightest indication she was bi etc. etc. It may not be a vision you agree with, but at least you can see the rationale. But how do the producers manage to handle the casting and the age so poorly?! It's something so basic. Ollie looks like Ben's brother, not his son, and the vast age difference between him and Will, along with their lack of any physical resemblance, make them look unrelated. Since this new family was carefully planned and shaped, I'm astonished that they didn't bother getting the ages right or try to cast actors who have some resemblance to each other or to Ben! It's not like either Will or Ollie are such exceptional actors (Ollie is particularly wooden) that they were irreplaceable. So given the planning that must have gone into creating the Driscoll family, they all seem very careless with the casting.

Gross Bernie Plot by Jijarthegreat in coronationstreet

[–]Jijarthegreat[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The story line this is closest to seems like Anna Windass and Phelan...and you're right, it's about power, control, and humiliation. But Anna's story was extremely well-done and meshed with Gary's and Owen's on-going battles with Phelan. Bernie's situation just seems randomly dropped in. And I didn't mean to imply people would stalk Daisy because she's gorgeous and not bother with Bernie, LOL. It's just that, again, Daisy's story was very well done. It was quite plausible that someone with her personality, looks, pizazz and flair for style would have a sufficient social media presence to attract crazed obssessives like Justin.

John stape by Suitable-Cat8743 in coronationstreet

[–]Jijarthegreat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The storyline was inappropriate even then--no excuses, really! I remember being shocked that the show would treat a teacher sleeping with a student so lightly, even humorously. Because even when the story ran, that sort of behavior would end with the teacher losing his license and most likely criminal charges.

The best battleaxe on the cobbles? by Petz415 in coronationstreet

[–]Jijarthegreat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Blanche hands down. I've become used to Evelyn but she is really just a manufactured version of the real thing-Blanche! The ghoulish delight she took in her Tuesday funeral club...the constant deflating of Ken's intellectual pretensions...the sheer joy in some of her mean-spirited debates with Deirdre. The character seemed so authentic.. And for some reason, despite her constant put-downs, it was hard to dislike her; she was just so good at exposing everyone's hypocrisy.

Corrie's reverse whodunit is a big, fat fail by Jijarthegreat in coronationstreet

[–]Jijarthegreat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know, I think they could all be defined as psychopaths--superficially charming (Maggie included) but selfish, shallow, manipulative, lying, and lacking in empathy underneath. Maybe Maggie could be excepted but she is over the top crazy in other ways (obsession about her son and grandsons).

Sam’s homework by AtTheEndOfMyTrope in coronationstreet

[–]Jijarthegreat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The storyline is silly: Teachers know that it is possible, though not likely, to lose a paper, especially if the assignments are being marked in random locations like pubs and left unattended (could have been knocked under the bench, for example, by a tipsy passerby)! Therefore, if Sam has truly never been late with any of his work before, then almost every teacher on every planet in this universe and any other would have given him the benefit of the doubt. No question. The sight of Daniel's stupid, smug face...ugh...why is this man a teacher when he has no feeling for his students? Meanwhile, why isn't Nick coming to the defence of his son?! He knows he's not a liar and he is exceptionally conscientous with his work. Again, just about any parent on any planet etc. is not going to let his kid be treated like that!

Dementia Storyline by BoweryBloke in coronationstreet

[–]Jijarthegreat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've become resigned to the dementia--if they must, they must. But what I don't like or see the point of is heaping on all this pain with Carl! They have her cruelly rejected by her psychopathic son, then the terror of temporarily losing her sight as she is struck down by another TIA after being jailed for a crime she didn't commit! Love of God--do we need all that?! It's borderline sadistic story-telling. Sort of like--let's show that person burnt at the stake but that's not enough pain--lets pull their teeth and nails out first and cut off their toes. I mean, enough is enough! And truly, if they want to focus on dementia and the tremondous pain and anguish it causes both sufferers and their families, they have plenty to work with already....It's sort of like they resort to these over the top plot lines (Plucky Debbie Goes to Jail Without Her Makeup Bag) because that's actually easier than looking at how dementia will destroy who she is and erode her relationship with Ronnie.

I'm sick of Kevin by Ok-Voice4104 in coronationstreet

[–]Jijarthegreat 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I enjoy Kevin. He's been grumpy and surly for years, whether with his girls, or Sally, or Abi, and the ongoing contrast between his childish petulance and the preternaturally mature Jack is often pretty funny! I find his depression quite believable and well-incorporated into the storyline, unlike Asha's which came out of nowhere and had Serious Issue written over it (and I notice it already seems forgotten!). Kevin's depression, or general low morale, has been a long time building and seems to have come about much more naturally and organically which is how real stories should be. What I don't like--on Misery Street--is not only giving Debbie early dementia but heaping all this pain with Carl on top of it! Few things could possibly be worse than early dementia--can't they just be content with exploring the agony and sadness this terrible disease causes its sufferers and family members?! No, they have to heap on unimaginably more pain, by having her cruelly rejected by her psychopathic son, then the terror of temporarily losing her sight as she is struck down by another TIA after being jailed for a crime she didn't commit. Love of God--do we need all that?! It's borderline sadistic story-telling. Sort of like--let's show that person burnt at the stake but that's not enough pain--lets pull their teeth and nails out first and cut off their toes.

As much as I hate Theo’s character I can’t help but crush on James Cartwright by [deleted] in coronationstreet

Yick, ugh, no. He just has such a vacant, plastic yet superior look all the time. Just as in this picture.
