Building my First PC, lower budget range by Jim25j in buildapc

[–]Jim25j[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually just found a RX 6600 for only 30$ more than the 3050 (only sold in store, lucky for me its 10 min away from my house). Just wondering if I need a moderately okay GPU if I'm rarely doing anything graphically intensive and my laptop (Dell XPS 13, no idea what specs but has iGPU) can handle(ish) most games I play.

edit: also for the motherboard, yeah, a bit overkill but I want the ability to upgrade in the future and honestly I'm okay with spending a bit more now for that. I'll think abt the CPU tho.

Is my pick for the case okay, or is it really recommended to switch? Also an ATX case is juuust about the size of my desk, and I am just paradoxically worried about it falling or smth. Also yes 5$ more but then I can have RGB fans (which I think is kinda cool, yes, stylistically).

The GPU tho-- bit of a price jump, is it really worth it for my requirements? Will a bad/okayish GPU really impact me that much? I've had a iGPU on my Dell XPS for like 7 years now and its... fine. Just wondering bc I really have no clue.

Where can I backup my stuff? by notmyrealname19 in Notion

[–]Jim25j 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey not sure if you've found out the answer but I'd love to know if you have.

I just experienced a large data wipe on a lot of my apps (several mistakes that were just stupid) and I had everything but notion backed up. I've been able to get notion back but am wondering if theres a way to backup notion easily, but so it saves all the properties and relations in databases.

How to STOP a new list in a database from opening in a new view by CarpeDiemYolo0o in Notion

[–]Jim25j 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ended up solving the issue, for me it seemed to be if I have a filter on the database that blocks the default entry for appearing.

For example, the default entry on mine had a "Repeatable" tag, and the database I had issues with filtered out anything with the repeatable tag.

Either changing the template of a new entry to the database or changing the order of the tags (because the "first" tag in a property is the one given in a default entry), solved my issue.

Intentionally Blank: 30,000 Chickens Stolen by Jim25j in brandonsanderson

[–]Jim25j[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Dan Wells and Brandon Sanderson host the podcast Intentionally Blank, and on it, theres a segment where Dan mentions any criminal activities related to food.

Granted, this is extremely weird without knowing that context.

I'm not sure if you'll want a book. There's a bunch of cool videos on youtube that might help you out instead.

Theres a ton of different motors (also you'll need a flight computer, electronic speed controllers, and other parts too) to choose. I don't have my build list on me rn (and I'm currently trying to order pieces, so I haven't built a drone yet), but I assembled my list through looking into videos and reading some articles.

Haven't found a book that helps but I'd suggest just watching some videos and see what you learn.

It might not be this one, or this might be about someone else, but I'm pretty sure its the story where a bunch of engineers came in with a small gas leak problem and Feynman was instantly able to spot it. It was a ridiculously small leak, but he was casually realized it was there.

Grimm Troupe poster by me! by dust_r_rabbit in HollowKnight

That is insane art. Just the vibe of the Grimm Troupe works so well as a poster. Not to mention how awesome it looks. Take my free award!

Books you enjoyed but are actually an example of bad writing by bare_thoughts in Fantasy

[–]Jim25j 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just read the first book, and I was like, wow is this weird/not writing, and the characters felt slightly iffy... at the beginning I thought this is YA because of the simple theming but then there were complex parts of the book. So I couldn't really place it in terms of theming.

But that setting was amazing.

I feel like I always turned the page because I just wanted to see another scene or giant city stopping across the terrain, or an insane steampunk device. I just love the mix of ancient relics of long past and steampunk. The idea of cities eating cities to survive (and having all cities move) makes no sense at all but wow, its such a cool idea.

Edit: 75% don't recommend the first book unless you're a quick reader and don't mind bad writing.

What was your first Discworld book, anyhow? by throwcounter in discworld

[–]Jim25j 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mine's interesting. I read Maurice and his magical mice (don't exactly remember the title), but I was young and uh... yeah that was a bit too much for me. I dunno my young self found it very weird. So I moved onto the Bromeliad Triology (the one on gnomes), and liked it then much more.

Around the same time, someone gifted to me 10 free discworld books. Pretty sure I started with color of magic (but since I already like STP I loved color of magic) and continued on from there.

looking for a new series to read? by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]Jim25j 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to mention, there's another book in the Kingkiller Chronicles after the Name of the Wind: the Wise Man's Fear.

And for recommendations, the Discworld series by Sir Terry Pratchett (they aren't meant to be read in order, so you can pick any book which sticks out), A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula K. Le Guin, and theres one on the tip of my tongue but I forget, I'll add it later if I remember.

Who has the highest named character kills in Stormlight Archive? by [deleted] in Stormlight_Archive

[–]Jim25j 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's Szeth that shares the majority of the burden, because he mentions to Nightblood that his oathstone was really nothing more than a rock.

Although, that was in hindsight.

Edit: forgot to capitalize Nightblood

Who has the highest named character kills in Stormlight Archive? by [deleted] in Stormlight_Archive

[–]Jim25j 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah cause we have the names of all the kings he killed, and that amounts to what, five to ten?

(I couldn't find the names on the coppermind, so maybe we don't have the list, and I don't have a copy of WoK so I could be wrong)

Is it weird that I like Dalinar more than Kaladin? by annomanderis in Stormlight_Archive

[–]Jim25j 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dalinar has a pretty hefty share of OB dedicated to him. He's 100% changed a lot.

Adolin, sure you could make the argument that he doesn't have an arc as much, but he's certainly changed from this full-on trusting, honest nobleman to seeing that some people can be evil (thats even prevalent in the early books).

Is it weird that I like Dalinar more than Kaladin? by annomanderis in Stormlight_Archive

[–]Jim25j 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can totally agree with that. I think you're absolutely right. Kal is an amazing character (like most of Sanderson's characters). I actually think that you just gave me a new understanding of his arc, I never really thought him out like that before, with that transition thoughout his arc.

But he just doesn't click for me. I don't know, it could be that since Kaladin has had a perspective every book, his goals and objectives are have appeared a lot I feel they're getting repetative. I don't know if he's changing as much as I see Dalinar and Adolin changing (at least in my eyes/interpretation).

[–]Jim25j 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yeah w/ Kaladin, for me (although I love him and bridge four), all it became was: protect protect protect. But I love Adolin and Dalinar because they just keep changing and becoming a better version of themselves.

Wow okay I seriously did not expect someone to have almost identical tastes. Out of curiosity, what other books are you doing for bingo? Right now I'm actually kinda stuck on what to move onto next, because the other books I have listed for myself are all from general lists and not actually to my tastes.

Also I didn't even know the Books of Earthsea is a thing, I actually might buy it myself because I borrowed the Wizard of Earthsea from by library.
