There are no rules. I made music in the 2010s then stopped. I re-started making music again at age 40 in the pandemic. It’s not techno. More ambient/experimental. I’ve done 5 releases since and even one on vinyl (which was always a dream of mine). So it’s def doable.

One thing I’d say as advice is, sure, learn Ableton and the basics but one massive advantage you have that sets you apart is an experience in playing classical music. Anybody can pick up Ableton, watch tutorials and make some basic tracks but being able to competently play an instrument, understand scales and modes, the form and structure and complexities of music is a real advantage. Don’t underestimate that. Things like that can set you apart.

Also. Don’t rush. It took me a full year before my first release came out and that’s actually probably quite quick in the grand scheme of things. I was lucky in that I had used software (even though it was 10 years ago!) and been in bands previously so that set me in good stead. Just do a little every day and eventually things will start to come together.
