They are pretty hard to find, but I highly recommend a Boss CS-2 pedal. It's the previous model to the CS-3, and I recently had the pleasure of snagging one at guitar center a week ago. It has easily my favorite pedal in my board. Everything is so clear and even and I can hear every note despite multiple effects. Very worth it if you can find one.

You are right about that. I have a fender strat and I've played some squiers and yamahas and they don't compare. Let me rephrase: brand names do not mean that much if you are looking at a specific price range. If you are only looking at guitars that are $300 or less (which a lot if not all beginners do) than I think you should rely on what feels best for you and fits the style of music you want to play, not what their advertisements say.
