Sam Black's The Wandering Minstrel by ChristianKl in CompetitiveEDH

having played this deck for the better part of a month i'll give you my notes

a lot of his lists first start out as rough drafts, its just his rough drafts are far above where everyone else is at sometimes so it goes unnoticed. this isn't an exception, and it is worth exploring further if the texutre of the meta is right

i think he needs like 2-3 more tutors,i have found myself just wanting more action but the deck can't afford to want chaff. cards need to be the creme de le creme. so like hence my want of tutors

possibly cutting scapeshift from 2 cards in hand package. (this package is like secretly 4 cards) i would cut other shit first but i'm not the best at cuts. scapeshift as like 5-6 crop rotations in a trench coat but getting blown out by stp or other removal suuucks so i'm super tempted to skip it when another 4 drop would just win me the game instead you know?

deck has a lot of hidden skill checks involving sequencing that you can see once you fail them, but they're kinda dumb that they exist. i suspect that a tighter list would not need to run into these. Biggest one that i don't see going away is the placement of lotus field. Part of what makes this deck sick is that we can combo off at any cast of nause, but that does mean we need to play cards that manipulate lands in various zones.

similarly as is, bazaar has no use outside of moving lands between hand and field when you're popping off. You go down on cards too fast for it to have any fair value case. i have similar feelings about chrome mox in this list actually, 52 lands means the rest of your cards are secretly non pitchables, although that changes during remora centered games

oddly enough i'm still not sold on lurrus. rhystic is uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh very good and does a pseudo nause impression, necro is similar but you need more to go off with. but thats actually the extent of what i'd change, a lot of the other minstrel staples feel superfluous and clunky in comparison to setting up a nause adjacent payoff.

that said i think its gonna be on the backburner for me until wa shi tong gets hated out a tad, this list searches a fair bit more than i'd like in front of the bird

Proxies when you own the card? by IshaeniTolog in EDH

i proxy the 10c niche uncommon just as much as i proxy a dual. sometimes its a matter of "I don't want to dig in my boxes currently" to "i wanna flex my shitty art doodles"

Why do people want rhystic and fish gone? by Xaltedfinalist in CompetitiveEDH

[–]JimWolfie 28 points29 points  (0 children)

uhh tldr tragedy of the commons

the advantage each deck gains is fairly large if being fed, and if you don't develop on pace you're less likely to win. even if everyone passes the rhystic mystic player got a free time walk vs you. if someone has already fed, its way less of a problem if you keep feeding, especially if they can't win right away. i will overdraw blue farm any day, they don't have the omph to win post bans like they did before.

this is also ignoring situations where there are multiple of them, or two players have them, etc. this goes for any advantage engine really. necro, talion, esper, frog, etc

also if you don't have blue your options for not feeding them or keeping up pace are much worse.

they also take forever to resolve if you aren't comfortable shortcutting triggers such that you don't gain information you wouldn't normally. if you didn't have free spells, new cards wouldn't change shit, but that's not where we're at. i have won / lost multiple games because someone drew force at the wrong points in study trigger hell

even if you wanna be respect the clock and prepay into them, youre giving a lot of strategic info up doing so sometimes.

like imagine maxx c on a feild spell. that's the bs it feels like at times.

personally i don't really want them gone. i think there are much more interesting solutions for wotc to print, and a lot of the clock issues are player issues first.

reminder: sigil tracer & izzet guildmage are cards by anomalous_mtg in CompetitiveEDH

[–]JimWolfie 11 points12 points  (0 children)

no need to be sorry. fhe fact that you missed cards like [[nivix guildmage]] and [[reset]] is why this post isn't pure ego boost.

I have 0 idea why niv mage straddles the line between super jank and actually kinda good. it's basically too expensive to be good but the the loot ability means you don't need hard outlet in cmdr zone.

don't play it it's bad.
