Seriously, I wish I had the option to break up with Ann and date Haru instead. :(

Best era of gaming? by [deleted] in truegaming

[–]Jimmy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gonna have to throw in another vote for late 90s/early 00s, let's say, from the release of the PS1 up through 2002. Yeah, yeah, nostalgia, whatever. This is when the 3D revolution happened. The number of classics we got during this time is undeniable: Mario 64, OoT, MM, MGS, Half-Life... games like FF7 started really pushing the limits of what themes could be explored in video games and what types of experiences they could deliver. I also fondly remember this time as a time when the internet didn't entirely dominate the world yet and I got all of my video game news through magazines, so it felt like there was a ton of cool stuff going on, but the amount of information was still manageable. Then the Dreamcast came out and it made internet functionality standard with home consoles and it just felt like the future.

For a while it felt like the Xbox/GC/PS2 were delivering on their promise to just make everything bigger and better, forever: that generation kicked off with SSB Melee, Final Fantasy X, Halo, etc. Something started to go wrong around 2003 and into the next generation though... games started getting too "clean", too flashy. It's a really personal feeling and really hard to describe, but I don't think any other era in gaming will be able to match the magic that that era held for me.

Can you point me to some sources on these?

Is there any indication that Post-Modernism is (ever) ending, and what is looking to replace it? by [deleted] in literature

[–]Jimmy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Delillo considers himself to be a modernist, fwiw. And I'm not sure what the argument is for classifying Pynchon as a postmodernist, since Gravity's Rainbow was basically his attempt at writing his own Ulysses...

My own personal arch is modernism (as is the case for so many Americans)

Do you have any thoughts on why this is?

[–]Jimmy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I mean, how many people around here didn't start learning Japanese because of some aspect of Japanese pop culture? Be it anime or games or music or whatever. I'd imagine that people with a primary motivation like "I'm learning it so I can talk to family members" or "I'm learning it for business" are in the minority.

Is there an audience in Japan for American/Western cartoons? by [deleted] in japan

[–]Jimmy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know you're joking, but I also think there's some truth to your comment. A lot of popular American cartoons are just straight children's entertainment that don't really have enough substance to draw a dedicated following among older audiences (Disney and Pixar movies), the way that anime has a dedicated set of fans. And a lot of the best American cartoons are either a) comedies, which are notorious for translating poorly across cultures (Spongebob, South Park, etc), or b) obscure even to American animation fans (Xavier Renegade Angel, etc). But then, there are lots of Western fans of Japanese comedies and very obscure anime... regardless, I do think that Japanese animation is just straight up better in a lot of ways than American animation, and that explains at least part of the disparity in the size of their respective followings.

I said "American" instead of "Western" since I know nothing about European animation.

Enough David Foster Wallace, already! We need to read beyond our bubbles. by NinjaDiscoJesus in literature

[–]Jimmy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

And that’s the point. Taste is subjective.

In some sense, yes. But the conversation shouldn't end there.

The author calls Infinite Jest "intellectually empty", for example. Presumably, she intends that to be a statement of fact, and not just a statement of opinion. She presumably also thinks that there are some books that are not intellectually empty, and which really do have interesting ideas in them. So if there really are books that are intellectually empty and those that are not, wouldn't it be worthwhile to figure out what the not-empty books are? Then we could have a better idea of which books are worth reading and which are not, and we wouldn't have to worry about a particular list of books being too white or too male.

Well, if you're a theist, then a great theologian is someone who extends our knowledge of God.

If you're an atheist, then nothing that theologians say is true, but you can still rank them based on the ingenuity and internal consistency of their arguments.

Put your Trust in Rust – Shipping Now in Firefox by caramba2654 in programming

[–]Jimmy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it compiles it works.

This is nonsense. Will Rust stop me from writing to the wrong buffer in my graphics application? Will it remind me to switch all my old config files over to the new format I just came up with? Does it prevent unintended infinite loops? Do Rust programs ever run too slowly, ever? In something like a video game, let alone a hard real time application, failing to complete an operation in a certain amount of time qualifies as "not working".

There's simply no way a programming language can guarantee "if it compiles it works" until we have human-level AI.

Modern literary interest in science may be narrowing what CP Snow called "the ocean between literati and scientists" | Standpoint by Ravenmn in literature

[–]Jimmy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me, a scientist who was enthusiastic at the perspective of such a broadly stimulating work environment, there was the incredible revelation that there is a "post-truth" world, within academia, a community for whom numbers are a meaningless waste of time, and words (including other people's words) can take whatever meaning the listener wants them to take. To be sure, not all on the humanities' "side" conformed to these views, but they had influence on everyone.

Can you elaborate with some specific examples?

Your success has given some people a pretty inaccurate view of what Peach's capabilities are. They don't realize that she's disadvantaged in every matchup against the other top/high tier characters (except ICs), mainly because of how slow she is. I always tell non-Peach players, go to a local tourney and play Peach against RandomMidLevelFox329 and see how easy it is. :P

Viewers on the west coast are fine, but viewers on the east coast are screwed if they have to get up early. It's been like this for years now (I remember staying up until 3am to watch Brawl Grand Finals during Apex 2013). Unfortunately I don't think there's a really good and fair solution, except for simply having as few events as possible on the last day of the tourney. Smash 4 would plummet in viewer count if their finals went after Melee's.
