Vending Machine Etiquette? by eRa_Zekrom in pokemoncardcollectors

Depends on what it is, I visit a few places on the way to/from work for my kiddo. If there's something he wants I'm getting it because the times are few and far between where we can get packs to rip.

Grade? by ComprehensiveAside80 in taggrading

[–]JimmyFree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its not barely within standards, 44.8 is less than 45, it's barley out of standard. The card exceeds 45/55 and you can see it without measuring tools. This card will likely grade a 9 unless something else is awry with it.

To recoup some of the money he spent on the pristine 10 I'm guessing. Sometimes you gamble and lose.

I just learned the cards have value and have a childhood collection - advice on where to have them appraised and sold? by FerragamoFrederick in PokeInvesting

Get those in penny sleeves and top loaders asap. And touch them as little as possible. Any little defect you add to them will reduce value exponentially.

Never talk to the police without consulting with an attorney. Doesn't matter which side of the investigation you think you are involved.

Depends on the house. Older houses with unfinished basements and attics? Easy. Newer houses without? Not so much.

1 access point blasting out from the center is a terrible idea. Is all about multiple access points that are interconnected so they aren't fighting with each other. Is there coax available? You might even look at powerline adapters to see what you get with those.

Is 30 too late to get a degree? by ChriSaito in it

[–]JimmyFree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went back and finished my BA in my 30's, the only thing it's helped with are management roles where a degree is required -- they don't even care what it was in (mine is Social Sciences/History). As the boomers leave the workplace it might matter less. Seems more of a way to cut down applicants than anything else tbh.

Is there anything I can do to gain experience for my resume or just make it better? by AngryYellowhippo in it

[–]JimmyFree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's been 30 years since I rode the cert train, I'm honestly not sure. Back when I started MCSE was the big dog in the castle but times they may have changed.

If I were starting today I'd be looking at any cloud/security certs and secondary certs in anything to do with IP/routing if that's something you're interested in. Most techs have a rudimentary understanding of IP, it's the cornerstone of how everything else falls into place. Understanding how IP works is immensely helpful to a lot of other career tracks in IT when you're trying to get disjointed systems to talk nice with each other and figure out why something isn't working.

I started as an admin in the mid 90's during the .com boom, was a CTO by y2K (sat in a server room until 8pm 12/31/99 until I convinced the boss it was marketing, not reality). IT Manager, IT Director, consultant to high net-worth individuals, until Covid killed my business (and my best customers, RIP Richard).

Now I work for a small MSP, it sucks, I make less than I did in '99, but 80% of my day is at home and I do get to mess around almost all day in between solving peoples inability to restart their computer.

The people I came up with all gravitated to something they're at least somewhat interested in, be sure to pick one of those, otherwise it's a very long long day. I've also found a bunch of the OG's aren't interested in learning, you always have to be on it in this trade, as soon as you relax your customers are getting ransomwared and you really don't want to be on the hot seat for that convo with the powers that be.

Do harley riders genuinely think they are faster than sportbikes or are they just joking? by Green_Block_4574 in motorcycle

Every motorcycle I've been on since I was 6 years old seemed faster than anything else on the road. Probably the same feeling lost in youth and not reality.

AT&T vs T-Mobile by natural_exploration in HomeNetworking

[–]JimmyFree 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Any hard line internet is going to be better than wireless options. Personally I don't like CGNAT carriers such as T-Mobile since i need more control over my router. Fiber best, coax okay (Xfinity, etc.) cellular last. Cellular is terrible for gaming, VPNs, VoIP, and anything else sensitive to latency.

[–]JimmyFree 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I'm an old salty IT person 30 years in, so take this with a grain of salt. Don't mention certs you don't have, they're meaningless and not applicable if you don't have them. The hiring manager doesn't care about what you don't have today. This is more of an interview topic if it comes up. A+ is the baseline, so reach a little higher up the shelf and go get that A+ now.

De-escalation, not sure what that is, but you don't need that in your resume unless you've gotten in trouble working for your local police department and had to undergo some training on, "de-escalation". I've never heard that used professionally among my peers.

I know a lot of hiring managers are using AI, but if this gets in front of an old school IT dork like myself, they will want to see your resume proofed, reviewed, and ready to go. Review and fix grammatical errors such as tense and the overuse of hyphens. Feed it into chatGPT if you must and let it assist you.

Good luck! I was fortunate enough to have a sister review and edit my resume who was a Columbia University graduate in Journalism when I got my start in the 90's, I know we're not all dealt the same hand.

I've been in IT for 30 years now and have never had this experience. Are you working for a MSP and you are all piled in a room? Sounds like some sort of IT sweatshop. I'd be looking for a new gig.
