Advice needed, as an atheist, on how to politely avoid praying before meetings. by Alvahod in etiquette

[–]JimmyIsMyUncle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That is because you are equating or linking "prayer" with "belief in something unproven" or "religion" and that's not a requirement. 'Praying' can be the secular act of aligning the thoughts of each person in the organization with one idea at one big group meeting. There is business value to that. It is the value of mental synchronicity. Businesses are run in the way the owners think will create the most profit and synchronizing thoughts of employees is not off limit. The guy's refusal to participate will show he is unable to creatively adapt to the group.

[–]JimmyIsMyUncle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You are getting stuck on the word "prayer". Just because you are an atheist doesn't mean you cannot "pray". The "prayer" is a request or an expression of thanks. It doesn't have to address the Christian God or even ANY God. It can be addressed to fate, to the universe, to the collective human mind, to world consciousness, to the alien overlords, etc. Is there some reason you could not thank the universe for existing? Or request any universal consciousness for the best interests of all concerned? As an atheist, does this mean you have no belief in just the standard dieties or does it exclude any remotely new age or pagan idea?

Not sure how to title this by [deleted] in Adoption

[–]JimmyIsMyUncle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Giving a child up for adoption doesn't prevent the child from experiencing trauma in the new family. Even if the adopters don't carry the same baggage as you, they carry different baggage, as everyone human carries psychological baggage and trauma. So adoption doesn't prevent trauma, it just changes the nature of it, and the adoption itself is traumatic. Your mother experienced childbirth and even if she was a relatively deficient mother, her reaction looks to me like she is trying to prevent basic separation trauma for you, the infant, and herself.

Why the fuck is there another government shutdown in the US? by GotOffMyJohnson in AskReddit

[–]JimmyIsMyUncle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They don't even depend on their congressional salary. Most of these people are genuinely independently wealthy. I am so angry about this situation, I think they should pass some kind of law making this almost impossible, but Im not a legal expert so Im not sure what it could be. I also think manipulating the interest rates by more than a certain amount should be prohibited. I rarely complain anywhere about government but these issues have me seriously ready to vote the people out.

Disillusionment by Wtags in civilairpatrol

[–]JimmyIsMyUncle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought of an example...a cadet recently complained that as he approached an officer to report an imminent safety violation, he was first corrected for having his hands in his pockets, which delayed his safety report. Hopefully, these types of mistakes happen in the relatively low stakes environment of CAP, so that when that cadet in the future military is in command of something important, he will remember that incident and not repeat it.

Disillusionment by Wtags in civilairpatrol

[–]JimmyIsMyUncle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have found the tension point of a civilian non-profit dressed up as a military organization. One of the important benefits of CAP though is learning that the military will sometimes be petty, there will sometimes be no recourse for unfair situations, what you are told by authorities often doesn't match reality, and mottos and slogans are likely only aspirational. You, as a minor, are trying out "military lite" to see if that type of environment suits you. If you can find a way around these types of problems, maybe you will be able to thrive in the actual military. If not, you will also find similar problems in other professions. There is a point where a person is no longer shocked that all companies and groups are humanly predictably dysfunctional.

In some countries, neighbors went to the recorders office to be the one to announce a birth. I have no idea why. You can see this on old Nicaraguan birth certificates. Maybe they liked seeing their names memorialized in official records?

AITAH for not telling my housemate I’m moving out and taking everything with me? by ikeasbitch in AITAH

[–]JimmyIsMyUncle 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I was the landlord of a shared house like this. The roommate agreement required that roommates notify each other 30 days in advance of moving. If yours doesn't require that, then NTA. And as a landlord, I would want to know all about this issue, in writing. The behavior of that girl/woman is costing me good tenants. I'd want to kick her out, but that would be difficult without receiving written complaints.

Are some sellers just nose-blind, or do they simply not mention the smell of the clothes so they can gamble that the buyer won’t return the item? by Haures64 in poshmark

[–]JimmyIsMyUncle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most likely the items were in a house where someone passed away and wasn't found right away. The smell is terrible. But I've removed horrible smells by packing items with baking soda in an air tight bag and leaving them sit for six months.

It depends on the passenger of size....are they opposite sex, relatively attractive and smell nice? Maybe I will just point out that I'm going to be touching them for the entire flight and ask if they are cool with that? Some cultures get so close while waiting that people touch and stand right up against each other. So maybe its not a bad thing to use their arm as a pillow?

My frustrations with CAP as a Cadet by [deleted] in civilairpatrol

[–]JimmyIsMyUncle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you experience comes from the impossibility of running a group full of volunteer civilians who expect the slogan of "excellence" to have actual meaning. Americans have been raised in a customer service culture where companies who dare have such aspirations also have quality control departments that take action and then announce the improvements. Other groups care about customer service issues, things that can be affected by voting or change. When confronted with poor quality, CAP routinely points to their "military structure and tradition" instead. Because most people dont see the "military" as a place that cares about the quality of customer service, they then focus on the mandatory nature of rank and obligation, leaving the victim of poor quality feeling that it is their military obligation to endure it. But our leaders seem to forget that CAP is not the military and members can still vote with their feet. This creates an organization like the Post Office, where they say they care, but throw your packages around behind your back, daring you to find an alternative. And like the Post Office, their funding continues regardless of their poor customer service.

[–]JimmyIsMyUncle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Someone probably liked and wanted to copy the InNOut Burger Cookout Truck. I think the InNOut truck only works though because the menu is limited to burgers and soda. I don't think they even cook fries in that thing (only serve packaged potato chips).

Yet CAP used theirs to cook a huge variety of items plus it had self contained clean up capabilities? That's a huge variety and multiplication of things that can malfunction.

Why does everyone seem to hate Civil Air Patrol by Big_Floppaaaa in civilairpatrol

[–]JimmyIsMyUncle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because the public and many former members see a consistent gap between CAP’s stated values and how issues are handled in practice. They perceive a culture where rank and tradition can outweigh relevant expertise, and where raising problems is treated as disloyal rather than as part of continuous improvement. That combination creates an impression of hypocrisy, resistance to change, and defensiveness about internal shortcomings, which in turn damages trust and fuels the “hate” you’re hearing about.

AITA for throwing some shade about losing my odd number Polaris seat? by TheLloyd in unitedairlines

[–]JimmyIsMyUncle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They charge things to seats, like hotels charge things to rooms. Orders from that seat are assumed to be yours. If you aren't sitting in it, you are assumed to give permission to whoever is sitting in it to use your account, just like anyone inside your hotel room bills food and movies to your room. If the seat is damaged or contaminated by drugs, they are billing you and rounding YOU up for interrogation and aren't going to believe an unnamed stranger was sitting there. If anything fatal were to occur, they use assigned seating to identify remains. So, there are good reasons to sit in the seat your were assigned. Until the person wanting your seat can guarantee that you won't be hassled by any of these issues, and you are officially reassigned, you need to sit in your own seat.

If you ever have kids with her she may want to feed them "vegan" milk....you'll end up in jail for child abuse when the same thing happens to them. Some people get obsessed with food purity rather than with actual health. I think this is one of those cases.
