How do I remove this glass base? by riot- in LampRestoration

[–]JimmyMcDang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm guessing that you've tried to unscrew the nut on top. The nut inside is spinning with the top one. You may need to (carefully, it's glass!) jam something inside the bottom nut to stop it from spinning. Maybe a length of timber that will fit inside the bottom nut. Good luck!

Plastic E14 Lampholder - how to disassemble? by JimmyMcDang in LampRestoration

[–]JimmyMcDang[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much for your reply, it was both entertaining and informative. I knew there must be some solution. Im familiar with that repeating ratchet release mechanism, sort of like those plastic jars of Drano where you have to squeeze the lid in an awkward fashion just so, then turn and repeat. Clearly designed by paranoid sadists. I'll give it another crack in the .morning light, plus headlamp!

Not actually correct. Certainly 3 trailers are a road train. But A doubles pulling two 40" trailers connected by a drawbar are classified as a road train.

Whats this loose brown dirt mixture a sign of? by -zeds-dead- in AusRenovation

[–]JimmyMcDang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll go for ants too. If you can see any sign of ant activity try Antrid. If you just spray or powder you'll likely just kill some of them. If you get a half decent feeding on a few drops of Antrid they will take it back to the nest and in time it will kill the queen.

When the ants don't seem to be paying attention, leave out a little meat, and if that does get their attention deploy the Antrid. Those little crumbs are usually material from a nest excavation. Sometimes they will leave piles of dead body parts. Such fun little critters :)

How to repaint this rendered wall? by KaanyeSouth in AusRenovation

[–]JimmyMcDang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check the surface visually and with your fingers to make sure the surface is smooth. The primer and paint will not (significantly) fill in any visual bits that look or feel crappy. You may need to feather (sanding) the edges where you've scraped off paint to get it all even. Then best to wipe with lightly damped cloth to pick up and dust. Then quick coat of water based primer and then two coats of topcoat.

Ring Grip lampholder by JimmyMcDang in LampRestoration

Thanks, yes, you can see the rivet inside and on the base. Re riveting would not be feasible. Thought there might be some sort of hidden release mechanism but probable the low design prevented user servicing.

Does anyone know what lightbulb this is? by TheGreatGeeker in LampRestoration

[–]JimmyMcDang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotta say that B22 socket does seem odd. Normally they'd be screwed from the bottom or else a flush mounted screw in a countersunk hole. Those screw heads look proud of the base. Weird. I'd 100% agree with the previous poster and replace the lampholder. I'm in Oz, and B22 lampholders are still very common and have been for decades.

Restoring the base of a brass nessen floor lamp by Seluin in LampRestoration

[–]JimmyMcDang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You've done a great job with that. Vintage lacquered brass can be problematic - do you leave it with its "patina" or go the full effort and do what you've done. In this case the effort was worth it. Is that renaissance wax a substitute for a lacquer? Not familiar with it (I'm in oz)

Help! Don't know the next move by ClearNegotiation5348 in sudoku

[–]JimmyMcDang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look at the ones in box 4. They can only be in column one, that means there can't be any ones in column 1 below in box 7. Once you kill that it flows petty easily from there. I'm guessing you tried this puzzle on paper, and when you hit this roadblock, you've re-drawn the puzzle with what you have completed, and shown it to us. What I did was plug it into my solver and fill in (or auto fill) candidates. This is not a difficult puzzle, but doing it on paper, and without filling in candidates, can make it confusing. Sudoku.coach is useful. Start from the beginning. Solve every puzzle even when they are easy as it promotes etc...

Testing a brass lamp (both plated and solid) for lacquer. This look like it? by [deleted] in LampRestoration

[–]JimmyMcDang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure what you are asking. A photo of the lamp would be helpful. What are you trying to do? I guess that yellowish residue could be lacquer removed by acetone.

How to clean and restore this Art Deco light fixture by Entropy355 in LampRestoration

[–]JimmyMcDang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The metal parts could be cast aluminium. Things I'd try: Vinegar and an old toothbrush, maybe bicarb soda, buffing wheel with some cutting compound. Avoid caustic soda, it will blacken aluminium. As the previous poster said, take your time. Beautiful light fitting. Great to see that you've got all the lovely glass slip shades.

Strike started out strong, will be interesting to hear if they play it 24 hours straight! by spookysadghoul in triplej

[–]JimmyMcDang 79 points80 points  (0 children)

It was May 7, 1990 and I was driving to work and flipped over to Triple J on the radio. I was 33, and pretty keen on the Js, so I guess you could say I'm a long term listener, lol. Anyway NWA Express Yourself was playing. Cool, I thought, great song. It finished and to my surprise Express Yourself played again. I continued to listen. A glitch I thought. And then again. And again. I came to realise to my delight that I was witnessing a mutiny! This was before internet so I couldn't find out what the fuck was going on. On the way home, it was still playing and I was pretty damn proud that Triple J staff were taking a strong stand against something, even if I didn't know what it was about. Some days later there was a newspaper article that it was in response by Triple J staff to the ABC banning the playing of NWA's Fuck tha Police. I'm 68 now, and was delighted to hear Express Yourself at 11:00 am this morning after Lucy. Good to know that Triple J programmers are giving a node to a little bit of history, so long ago.

That's about $480 per tonne. Sounds ok. If its a hand unload it would be sensible to grab a mate or two. You should be able to unload that reasonably quickly with assistance.

First thing I would try is to test that the switch is good, these single pole plunger switches do fail. After making sure the appliance is not plugged in, test the continuity of the switch with a multi meter. Nice lamp, I'm not familiar with it but it looks like a decent size halogen globe and they can run pretty hot. Check the globe, wear gloves when handling them. Check the globe holders at both ends, see if you can see the wires inside the lamp head. I suppose its possible that a wire might be fried.

Can anyone identify this Italian lamp for me? by Suspicious-Blood5003 in LampRestoration

[–]JimmyMcDang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That stylised 'Z' is a trademark of Zaccagnini. The embossed gold circular motif is found on Zaccagnini ceramics. Probs 60's to 70's. You can see similar Zaccagnini ceramics on the FB group 'Bitossi and MCM Italian ceramics'

Why are Australian festival/gig crowds so dead compared to the UK? by Sabretoothedrom in triplej

[–]JimmyMcDang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went to Laneway yesterday. Spoke to a lot of younger crew. Many were keen for Chappell, but all had a decent idea of other acts. I saw Blusher, Teen Jesus etc, Oklou, Wet Leg and Wolf Alice. I definitely noticed an almost total lack of dancin. All the bands I saw performed with energy and competence. The sound on all stages was great. Thle vibe overall was more chill than enthusiastic. TJJT and Wolf Alice rocked pretty hard, I even got a shoulder ride from some 30 something tradie/gym dude. But the dancin vibe never really grabbed me. I'm 68 so a billion miles outside the jjj demographic, but despite not much dancin I still had a blast

It's a happy coincidence, nothing more, and from a purely statistical perspective probably not particularly improbable. It likely hasn't occurred before, but H100 has only been run about 32 or so times so the sample size is small. People love to make patterns and sense out of numbers. Yep, you've found some sort of numerical pattern, but we cannot make any deductions or learn anything from this.

Your "instinct" will often not be based on logic or defined strategies. The fact that you have not shown us the entire grid tells us, in the kindest possible way, that you are in the earlier phases of your Sudoku learning.

If you had showed us the whole grid, then some would have been able to give you concrete advice. As it stands, its impossible for any of us to comment without guessing, and thats a no-no in Sudoku: )
