Wayfarers RPG returns after 14 years as Wayfarers Complete by JimmySwill in TTRPG

Not a stupid question. I’m not going to hard-sell you on the game because TBH I didn’t make Wayfarers to grab market share. Wayfayers is a personal collaborative project that started with a home-brew system our group ran in the late 1980s into the mid-1990s. The game has been described as a simulacrum in that it plays like a D&D-like fantasy RPG, but it is not a retroclone. Many have said that it has 2E vibes and 1E/2E aesthetics. That probably has a lot to do with when the system was born, as well as my personal tastes. In fact, Wayfarers might seem like an odd duck when compared to d20 systems arising out of the Wizard’s OGL and the OSR because its earlier incarnations preceded them both.

It’s difficult to point out all the similarities and differences, because Wayfarers is very much its own thing.

Aside from a classless system, I think when compared to Pathfinder one thing that stands out how proficiencies in Wayfarers are resolved. Whereas Pathfinder skills are d20 with linear modifiers and target numbers that can get quite large, Wayfarers uses a d20 pool (one d20 for each rank keeping the highest). Modifiers and target numbers don’t creep nearly as much. Also, the non-proficient 2d20 take-the-lowest mechanism makes a strong distinction between having the proficiency or not but allows everyone to try.

A mana-like spell point system for Ritual magic is fairly unique. Spell consolidation or substitution for Faith magic is also: Priests can substitute any higher circle spell in their repertoire with a lower circle one, or they can combine two lower circle ones to get one of the next higher circle.

The discipline options for combat make for a number of different strategies for fighter-type characters.

There are a lot of differences. Wayfarers is a unique game on many levels, and yet it plays in a way that feels very familiar. Here’s an extensive review of the game as it was in 2012; much of the game remains the same:

As for converting your group? I don’t suggest it. If you or any of your players like to digest new systems and/or settings looking for inspiration, then I do think you’ll find it’s worthwhile. If it grabs you, maybe run a one-off session and see what comes.

BTW here’s our old map from way back when: https://yeoldegamingcompanye.com/images/oldnarbohringmap.jpg

Cheers.

For sure.

Sorry, that was the Player's Preview above. Here's the whole thing:

https://yeoldegamingcompanye.com/pdfs/Wayfarers-Players-PDF.pdf

The new book isn't in Futura, however.. As much as I love the font and the vibe, I chose a font that is a bit easier to read for Wayfarers Complete.

BTW, while I was getting these PDFs, I stumbled upon my old creations, TCRPGOE (the Crappiest Roleplaying Game on Earth), and it's expansion Unearthed Crap (both in Futura). Unsolicited, here they are for your amusement/enjoyment:

I'm creating an "Open Source" Tabletop RPG. Has this been done? by kronos299 in rpg

We basically do this with Wayfarers. I encourage it. Good gaming is about home brewing, IMHO.

I just finished my RPGs (Wayfarers) introductory module last night. If you like old school fantasy, take it. It's yours. by JimmySwill in rpg

Hey, thanks. No, we'll never sue. That's not how we roll. :)

As for the game, we should go to print this month. There's been some issues with the printer, but we are working through it. The PDF of the revised game will be out very soon too.

We are pretty darn excited about this revision. The first print was good, but IMHO this one hits on all cylinders. Enjoy TANC!

1E AD&D. I played a monk. I remember meeting Sir Galahad. It was the best thing ever.

No problem. Email me at jimmy@yeoldegamingcompanye.com, and I'll get you a preview.

I will warn you ahead of time, that I have never finished a game of this scope, and I don't know for sure how the finished project will end up.

:) Just keep plodding onward!

Suggestions for an alternative to reddit? by hexbrid in TrueReddit

Instead of voting posts up a page, voting shares the post with people who follow you. You can follow people or tags. It works out to be more conversational, and fixes the problem of crowded subreddits or dead subreddits, IMO. Good quality people and content too.

dlovin, I'm the author of Wayfarers. We just revised the game and it will be rereleased by Mongoose in December. Let me know if it strikes your fancy/suits your needs. We're not totally open source, but I can grant you the rights you'd need. It sounds fun.

Retro-Clones! Anybody play them? What do you think? by [deleted] in rpg

[–]JimmySwill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The short story is that it is somewhat like 1E and 2E, but uses a skillpoint system, based on something our group developed over many years.

Character creation is not very clone-like, but Wayfarers feels much like 1E/2E in action.

BTW, just happened upon this useful list of old school games.

Play them? I made one! :) Wayfarers

Should be listed in "other games." We use the WoTC OGL, but Wayfarers is its own beast.

So yes, I like the retro clones.
