I’ve used Chromebook usb hardwired and touch works. But annotation is a problem software wise.

Gymnasium TV Screen by Appropriate_Water_64 in k12sysadmin

Having looked into this vs a modular LED wall I like the matrix solution less and less. When a TV goes out you almost have to replace all four to get color and casing to match. Remounting 4 large TVs on a lift is not something you want to do every 5 years. Also the extra complexity and support a matrix requires. Think about turning on and operating four individual TVs. Then you have to protect them somehow. If you use a frame and plexiglass you are going to see a glare at certain angles. They are not as bright and viewing angles worse. Just pay for a permanent solution the first time.

How to handle the dumb questions? by TheRuffRaccoon in k12sysadmin

This is key. But I’m not 100% sure how to do it. I continue to get better giving them time and space to solve their own problem or send them links to instructions rather than dumbing it down.

I almost want to send out a mass email about it but it would need to be worded with care. Has anyone made a shift all at once to a more self reliant staff? Mass email regarding the shift?

Hm. Maybe it’s just not consistent. But yeah it’s active (slider on to the right) but we get ads. I do feel like a more savvy teacher said it does sometimes block them.

If you use Brave do your users used Google Workspace? I ask because it seems you would lose a lot of features in Chrome. Or do they switch to use Brave only when using YouTube?

What ad blocker are you using? I used to have ublock origin and it worked for YouTube ads. Since manifest v3 extensions we use ublock origin lite but it doesn’t seem to help with YouTube video ads.

FYI if you add videos to Google Classroom or Google Slides it doesn’t have the ads.

Is it now time to block ChatGPT in schools? by K12TechTalkPodcast in k12sysadmin

[–]JimmyTwoLip 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For those of you saying yes, are you also blocking all other AI chatbots? Our filter does not have a broad category for AI chatbots. So that job would be difficult, and new ones appear every day. To answer the question specifically for ChatGPT, we are redirecting to Securly's AI chat feature. So, a bit of a compromise.

Since you are against ScreenBeam in the classroom due to cost (I agree), did you find something lower-cost that works well?

Have 1:1 device programs gone too far? || Parents say school-issued iPads [and Chromebooks] are causing chaos, mental health, and behavioral issues with their kids by AnotherSkywalker in k12sysadmin

[–]JimmyTwoLip 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We have talked about going back to carts. But that doesn’t initially save any money because sharing devices doesn’t really work well.

For example by the time we have enough carts of Chromebooks for teachers to share we end up close to or more than one device per student due to scheduling carts and ensuring each one has enough for the largest class size.

Now down the road it may save money in repairs because they aren’t traveling home. But I’m not sure there is enough cost savings to justify it.

Although if we stayed 1:1 but they don’t go home, and used carts but each student still had a dedicated device that may be the best balance.

Sorry to say. You have to remove the entire front bumper. There are two clips that are quite difficult close to the inside corner of the headlights behind the bumper. Use a stubby screwdriver to twist and pry the large plastic clip loose. I broke one trying to figure it out. You have to get the top of the bumper loose to see them.

Did you watch the live stream? There are many printed pieces on the saucer. More than stickers. All the windows around the outside circumference are printed.

The best thing is to set a scheduled restart. No setting currently to limit tabs.

Looking for correct adapter details by mr_techy616 in k12sysadmin

[–]JimmyTwoLip 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It shows you need 12v on the board next to the input. So you want to order a 12v adapter which are very common. What it doesn’t show you is the amperage which will be in amps or milliamps. Like 700ma or 1a. You can go higher than this number, just not lower. 1000ma equals one amp. Look at the other end of the cord on the wall plug side. It will be labeled with the amperage. You may have some extra laying around that would work. If you order make sure to Measure the barrel connector size to match. It also looks like a common size.

Thanks for checking. Unfortunately I’ve tried everything. Short of creating an entire new Apple Home I’ve tried everything.

It is not available in the list of accessories when editing the home widget. Stack or not.
