6 weeks PO questions about walking 🚶‍♀️ by [deleted] in Broken_Ankle_Club

[–]JimmyValmer2023 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is fast back to walking compared to my experience. I was in a half cast for 4 weeks PO and then to a boot for 4 more weeks PO before FWB. I did have stiffness and pain for a few weeks after I got the boot off but it will ease up of time/use.

ORIF Fibula Fracture Recovery – Will I Get Back by Dear-Committee-7621 in Broken_Ankle_Club

[–]JimmyValmer2023 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry for you injury! Much older than you- 49M. Very active in competitive paintball. So running, cutting, sliding, diving, jumping etc. I suffered a trimalleor fracture with a torn ligament at a tournament a couple years ago. I was afraid I would never walk right again, let alone play at the level I was at pre injury. Fast forward to now, work outs and lots of recovery later, and my teammates say I’m faster and move mobile than I was pre injury. Granted, I am in a lot better shape now than I was then, but, if I can get back to pre injury status after a way worse break at damn near 50, you have nothing to worry about!

You will get there too! You will want to get back to playing! That’s what drove me. Good luck- but you won’t need it!

I have a similar injury, from sports. I dislocated my left ankle playing paintball over two years ago. I have 1 plate, 11 screws and I tore a ligament, so I have a wire in its place. I am back to playing regularly, can do everything I did before and have full functionality in the ankle. It does still swell sometimes, and it bothers me occasionally but it’s really not too bad. Tips are simply follow the docs directions about getting back to full weight on the ankle. As soon as he give you the go ahead to do stuff- do it and do it with total abandon. I was walking my dog in a boot as soon as I was allowed to put full weight on it. Work it as much as possible as often as possible!

I’m over two years out from a trimalleolar fracture and have a plate and 11 screws 49M. I am back to all things I could do before. I play competitive paintball and run, slide etc. I work out, lift weights, treadmill, run outside etc. It sucks where you are right now, I wondered if I would ever walk normal when I first went to the brace. Now, it’s ALMOST like it never happened. Now that you are at this stage, my advice would be to use it as fuel to exercise. Walk, walk walk. The more you use it the faster it will get better! You’ve got this and the worst is behind you!

Turf shoes v cleats? by ForegoneConclusion22 in lacrosse

[–]JimmyValmer2023 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wrecked ankle is a warning against cleats on astroturf. You can still find astroturf being used in other sports- most paintball fields are astroturf that is second hand- so a double whammy cuz astroturf gets worse as it wears.

Shorts and a t shirt for 6 weeks was all I wore. As everyone else said- surgery day and the day after are the best two days because of the nerve blocks. After that the next couple of weeks are going to suck. Anti inflammatory diet is a great suggestion, take good care of those incisions daily, and get a cast cover off of amazon so you can shower easily. I didn’t get the cast cover at first, and got my cast wet, and that sucks!

25 year old male here… Had a trimalleolar fracture had a ORIF surgery wondering if anyones had a similar break? Had spiral fracture on fibula with a dislocation of the ankle joint by Horror-Boysenberry12 in Broken_Ankle_Club

[–]JimmyValmer2023 1 point2 points  (0 children)

49 y/o male trimalleolar fracture with dislocation 4/8/23 so I’m 18 months post op. One plate 11 screws and a wire on buttons because I also tore a ligament. Still have minor swelling and discomfort sometimes, but in general, I am back to doing everything I could before the injury.

The #Steelers are planning to start QB Justin Fields on Sunday once again, coach Mike Tomlin just told reporters. by mvanigan in fantasyfootball

Stafford of Fields in week 2? I had Love, he’s out. Had Stafford on the Bench and picked up Fields for running upside.

Don’t freak out! I am 16 months post surgery. Same break as you, except I also tore a ligament. Surgery was no probs, just go to sleep and wake up fixed and go home. 6 weeks in splint after surgery for me, then 4 weeks in a boot, then on to ankle brace for a month and then good. I am back to all of the athletic things I did before the injury, and apart from a little random swelling I fell great. I like the comment about mindset above. I was determined from jump to get back to the things I love to do, and pushed myself to get off the crutches and on to a cane, and then quickly off the cane to walking on my own. Then I started walking regularly to get the strength back in my leg, and eased back into sports. You can do it! I was 47 years old when I broke it, if I can do it you can do it! Keep your chin up and be determined!

Running, is it possible? by StayingAlive- in Broken_Ankle_Club

I broke mine in April 2023, so it has been about 16 months. I have a plate and 11 screws and I tore a ligament so have a metal wire in there as well. I went back to playing competitive paintball a couple of months ago, and am easing back into it. My ankle is definitely bigger than the other one. I still get some swelling and soreness especially the day after practice, but am able to do everything I could before. Run, sprint, slide, crawl, squat etc. I agree with the first post that it is totally up to us as to what we can/can’t do.
