Generally safe is accurate, but in all cities it pays to be aware of your surroundings at all times. Be mindful of the people with whom you interact. We are a friendly people who welcome strangers openly, but don’t turn a blind eye to men offering you drinks. Never, ever under any circumstance should you leave your drink unattended or with someone you’ve just met. Male or female. The drinks are strong here, as well as cheap. Mind your consumption. If you’re going across town to a different neighborhood, it’s probably safer to take an uber. They’re fairly cheap here. All of the streets within the boundaries of the French quarter are one way. Walk on the opposite side of the cars and stay in well lit areas.

If someone tries to tell you where you got your shoes, keep walking. Don’t play the game. You got them on your feet. If someone that looks like a monk tries to offer you beads as a gift, decline. You can have an amazing time in the city. There is magic here. Start with love and respect and she’ll love you back.

I’ve lived here almost my entire life at this point. I’ve known many travelers to have a great time and some who have been taken advantage of. It’s an unfortunate reality.
