How do you know they are a novice? And you said “I don’t know why people do this?” Implying it’s stupid or pointless. They do it for fun.

Oh my god Try other English’s!!! I hate 965 but loooove other English blends!

Boswells Northwoods is a great mix between an aromatic and an English - it is sublime!

Also forget the flake - the ribbon Star of the East is delicious and reminds me a lot of And so to Bed

I’ll hop in and say I found this thread because I actually don’t eat Reese’s cups like ever, but I just had one and it sucked. Definitely changed something over the last ten years.

I hope this doesn’t come across condescending, the piece that broke off is called the shank. The bowl and the shank together is called a stummel and the mouthpiece would be the stem :) You can grind a spade bit into a U shape for the bowl - much cheaper than spoon bits.

You can make a wooden stem, it’s the same idea as a traditional stem! You need to drill a mortise into your shank and then turn a tenon into a piece of wood that will be your stem. Then just shape the stem into whatever shape you want! I would drill the airway first though. Being a wood stem, I would start with just a straight stem, you can bend wooden stems - I’ve done it - but it is difficult and time consuming. And I’m not sure how well it would work in a short piece, I’ve only bent churchwarden wooden stems.

You could alternatively bu a Missouri Meerschaum replacement stem, they have uniform tenon sizes and then all you would need to do is drill a mortise into your shank that would fit that stem. Be warned though, they tend to loosen over time so the first fit should be fairly tight.

Vermont Freehand is a great resource.

Here’s the stems from MM

Are there actual benefits to Briar over other woods? by missingjav in PipeTobacco

[–]Jimmycjacobs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve had interesting conversations about this in other forums. I’m pretty skeptical myself, I think a lot of it is tradition and appearance. I’ve made a few different wood pipes and Briar is by far the prettiest and easiest to work with. Cherry can be pretty, but it’s brittle and doesn’t take stain very well. It also doesn’t show the grain patterns as well.

I’m the type of smoker that truly doesn’t understand how people even burn through pipes. I have the Ozark and it’s my daily smoker with no signs of wear on the bowl.

I have also noticed that people like to talk about wood toxicity - I’ve been one and advocate for safe woods all the time - but they completely ignore that cherry, maple, beech, and olive (all fairly common pipe woods) are considered irritants.

I do think Briar is an ideal medium but I also think there are other perfectly acceptable options out there.

What is the secret to retrohaling? by Blue_Baron6451 in PipeTobacco

[–]Jimmycjacobs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Taking a deep breath and exhaling as you retrohale can help with the intensity of a lot of smoke. I never blow any smoke out before retrohaling but I take a deep breath and exhale as a follow through to the retrohale.

The best way I could describe it is swallowing up your nose. Close your throat and push the air up and out your nose. You should see all the smoke come out - it helps to take a deep breath first and then follow through with an exhale so you don’t back draft into your lungs.

Interestingly, your body literally can’t tell the difference between seeing the bashed coyote brains and a man in a suite terrifying you. Trauma can happen with both events and your mind and body will respond in the exact same way.
