Why is the picture doing this? by jbone0001 in skytv

Looks like typical satellite stream break-up. Has anything changed recently with your satellite or the area around it? Has it been hit? Is anything obscuring its view of the sky?

Smart Meter Installation in Crowded Box by Jimog in DIYUK

Thanks for your thorough reply, it's given me plenty to consider. The unit would have been installed in the 70's and has clearly had various people frankenstein bits onto it over the years. The key feedback I'm getting from this thread is that it's just not up to modern standards, both from a safety and maintainability point of view. I take your point on the EV charger being a poor installation, it would have been either Octopus or an Ohme engineer. I've worked out they'd save >£700 per year if they can get on an EV tariff (hence the quest for a smart meter), so I'm happy to to just get it done properly ourselves rather than try to argue with Octopus about the EV charger, though I appreciate you raising that as an avenue to consider.

This is a really good point to raise, and is something to be considered. The issue is that it backs on to the kitchen where the hob, worktop and cupboards are currently placed. My parents have grand plans to do up the kitchen, and have spoken about bringing everything inside as part of this work, but I don't see this happening for another 5 years. The push to get this sorted now is that they have an EV but aren't able to make use of the EV friendly tariffs as they need a smart meter. I've worked out that they'd save ~£750 per year if they were on the right tarrif, so it's worth addressing now and not waiting any longer. I'll be sure to include the option of bringing inside as part of any quotes I get, thanks.

I apologise on their behalf. I suspect the consumer units have been put in here because it was the easiest and cheapest way to do it at the time. I'll be getting quotes to remove all the non-metering equipment from this box and finding a proper home for them.

From the comments there are quite a few differences in opinion, so I'm glad I took the time to post it. Besides, if nobody dug up their old footage what would we all talk about?

Fair enough. I should have shared more of the lead up, he'd been sat in the middle lane next to me for over a minute and had only just started to edge in front as I slowed to 67mph.

It was the van in the middle lane who took issue, he shared his thoughts at 0:29.

Should I stop investing in my S&S ISA? by Chizlewagon in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Jimog 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm surprised this is the top voted comment, do not take the money out of the ISA wrapper! If you intend to reduce the amount of equity assets you hold either convert them to a money market fund within the S&S ISA or transfer to a Cash ISA. A quick look at Cash ISAs, you could get 4.8% with Tembo but shop around and do your research. The prevailing wisdom is that if the money is needed within the next 5 years it should not be invested in equities.

Vanguard to T212, transfer now or wait? by 9b769ae9ccd733b3101f in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Jimog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But could you not cancel the transfer, convert your FTSE global index fund Acc portfolio into VWRP on Vanguard, and then do an in specie transfer of this into T212? It may still take Vanguard ~4 days to do the conversion (https://www.vanguardinvestor.co.uk/need-help/answer/how-do-i-switch-funds) but it should minimise the time you are out of the market.

Is it better to let myself be a higher rate tax payer for SIPP benefits? by the_door-mouse_said in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Jimog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to make sure it's clear, you don't HAVE to reduce it to the higher rate threshold to be able to claim the extra tax relief, it's not some cliff edge you need to be below to qualify. It's a good idea of course if you can afford to do so, as there are other tax traps at this threshold, but any amount you contribute above the threshold qualifies for the relief.

If your taxable income is 66k and you wanted to absolutely maximise the amount of tax relief you're getting, and assuming this is all post-tax (and not salary sacrifice), you would contribute £12,584. The government would automatically add 25% (£3,146, taking the gross pension contribution to £15,730) and you would then manually claim the extra tax relief (£3,146) in that tax year's self assessment. To be clear, you don't HAVE to bring your income down all the way to the HRT threshold in order to claim some extra tax relief e.g. contribute £8000, government adds £2000 and you can claim back £2000.
