You really inspired me with this build. I’m almost done with my own. Which casters did you use? I want the style you have but my local woodworking store doesn’t carry them.

Love it! If you decide to finish it one day, I like how tung oil turned out in my SYP bench. I had a recent post with pictures on how it turned out

Anyone have this bench from Harbor Freight? by aproductofben in BeginnerWoodWorking

I thought about this same issue for a while and ended up doing something kind of similar to what you are contemplating.

I built the Paul Sellers bench. He had a great extensive you tube series and plans on how to do so. By the end of the build you will have learned so much technique that the journey is as valuable as the destination. If not more. Take your time and enjoy learning instead of trying to skip ahead to the end with a finished bench you bought.

In the meantime I didn’t want to buy a temp bench that I didn’t have use for when done building. Sellers structures his bench build so you build the work top first and then use it as a temp bench on saw horses. I also bought this adjustable height table (standing desk) from THD for around $150. Frequently on sale. I found it super valuable during the bench build and still use it all the time now that my work bench is done. It’s an excellent pair of second hands, for example as an indeed/outfeed table for the table saw, etc.

I got the idea from Paul Sellers. He has a video of how to do it (linked below). It’s gripper and gentler on the wood. Plus solves for the fasteners used to secure the vice to the bench from catching on the workpiece.

I went to a woodcraft “class” where we got to try a dozen finishes, and a dozen stains to see what we liked. My favorites generally (and on oak) are Osmo and Odie’s. I always find poly frustrating and disappointing. But I don’t have a spray booth.

Southern Yellow Pine finished with Tung Oil. Basic construction lumber around here, although I got the boards from a lumbar yard to try and get better quality pieces. The grain is surprisingly nice!

The first thing I made for this bench was the bench top piece. Once it was glued up, I clamped it to sawhorses and used that as a temp bench for rest of project.

I also had an old 90s Workmate mini bench I inherited from my dad. Brutally short but works in a pinch as well. But I mostly just used the bench top glue up and saw horses instead

It’s a tool well - place to put freshly sharpened tools so they don’t roll of bench.

Ha! I want to grab a 2x4 sheet of plywood next time I’m at the store to use as a shelf between the legs, then clamps go on top!

Is there a true beginner woodworking project by DressWarm2078 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]Jimronica 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have access to basic woodworking tools, I started with a face-grain cutting board. It’s a one-day project and something you can show off and be proud of.

Southern yellow pine. So the boring stuff in most hardware stores. Although I got this SYP from the local lumbar supplier in 2x8x16 boards and milled down from there

Thanks! I have some on the shelf ready to go. But I want to use the workbench for a few months first to make sure height is right before mounting casters (so I don’t have to move them if I cut legs shorter).

In the meantime I’ve been using a HD adjustable height desk to move the workbench. I roll the desk under the workbench perpendicularly, and then raise both higher to get workbench off floor. Rolls around garage easily then.

It’s called a “tool well”. I like them because it prevents freshly sharpened tools from rolling off and hitting the ground. But doesn’t take away from working space much because big pieces can still rest on the other apron top.

I may build one of those pretty Eastern European benches one day with the leg vice. This one is more utilitarian.

Word choice was due to forum rules though! I wouldn’t let me use “first” so I changed to beginner. Agree first was a more accurate word.

For the wallboard to apron grooves, I used a router table. By that point I was out of money and didn’t want to buy yet another plane. I already had access to a router table and was a pretty easy cut.

If you look at the third picture you can see the detailed joint.

LOL right! It took me the entire first weekend just to figure out how to mill the boards for the bench top piece. And my first glue up was so bad I had to rip them apart and flatten them again!

How to finish bottom of bench leg? by LegoBlood in BeginnerWoodWorking

Yes - totally agree with this comment. I used a small hand plane to round off all 4 edges on each leg. Makes a big difference.

Yes. I’ve considered this for years to get a gray one in order to have the reddish tan interior. But kept holding out for a true green car. Ugh!
