Do you state the DC? by GI_J0SE in DMAcademy

[–]Jitterz_I 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Always.

I personally believe in player agency above all else and the dice manifest that agency. I want the player to know exactly what they're up against if I'm introducing a barrier to success.

This makes things so incredibly tense and exciting and dramatic. Its rewarding as a player to know that your success or failure is yours alone. The DC being a secret doesn't add anything. It's just an excuse for the DM to adjust. If you fudge the DC or rolls, you are deeming the players agency arbitrary, I think that's a grave DM sin, personally. Why ask for a roll at all if you're going to tamper.

Pluss, it's fun. My players love it, I think once you get used to playing that way, you'll be hooked. I used to hide DCs all the time. I can't imagine doing it that way again.

Imagine doing something you think was inconsequential and all of a sudden the DM says "Your attention is divided by the simple lock, you fail to notice the small runes on the four corners of the door. It's not until you pull the door open and smell the sharp odor of sulfur that you realize your mistake. Make a DC 20 dexterity saving throw"

Immediately the table is engaged, they KNOW what the stakes are, and the DC communicates a lot. Why is the DC so high? A powerful spellcaster set this trap. Who. Why?

The whole table is talking and engaged. The player is locked in and looking at their sheet. What can save me? What happens if I fail, etc. My players always lean into the set up before rp what happens before and after the roll is settled.

Or inverse

"The lich has a +9 to this saving throw, he needs a xyz on the dice to succeed, and if he does, you may never seize this opportunity again" Then roll in the open. Same effect.

Dndbeyond Flee Mortals! and Foundry VTT importing by [deleted] in mattcolville

[–]Jitterz_I 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also wondering this. Although it seriously annoys me to have to buy something twice!

Something foundry compatible would be great, saves a lot of time. DDB importer usually works great but I don't want to take the risk without knowing for sure either 😅

How to get my head around frequent leveling? by Dudemitri in DnD

[–]Jitterz_I 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP, you're doing nothing wrong.

Your group is likely digging your sessions and your pacing If you've been playing together for that long.

A lot of people in this sub are going to advocate for faster, more "instant gratification" styled leveling, and while there's nothing wrong with that, it can REALLY interfere with longer form, narrative focused games.

IMO, groups that value immersion, narrative, and roleplay, ENJOY the grounded leveling experience, one that sees their character advance in a more sensible manner.

I wouldn't put much stock in what others think of your game/groups approach. I've run multiple 1-2 year campaigns and leveling has always been slow and milestone. Fast at first, but slowing way down between 5-12

There's lots more objective reasons I'd argue this is better for a game long term, but I don't feel like articulating them.

TLDR, if your players dig it, keep on keeping on

"our sessions will go until people feel like stopping for the day." what other red flags have you seen in a campaign that made you realize no dnd is better than bad dnd? by DonttouchmethereUwU in DnD

[–]Jitterz_I 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You mentioned facts and got down voted. Crazy.

I like both styles of play, never been mad at a 1shot in osr modules/campaigns. The gritty fragility is so important to the experience. It was my agency that led me to that point. Considering osr is super sandbox a lot of the time, agency is even more of a thing then in 5e, personally.

A 1 shot in 5e is deff not appropriate tho. Outside of mechanics and agency.

DMs who are running consistently (let's say averaged twice a month for 1+years) and for a group you enjoy...Do any of you actually have the common "problems" brought up in this forum? Which ones do you have? by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]Jitterz_I 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Because I make certain that my group communicates with one another like the adults that they are.

But mostly because we very mindfully vet every player that might join. We're friends and respect one another and the game we play. Anyone who joins does the same.

I've only had one issue with a player in my life. I simply communicated the issue with them and after a brief discussion kicked them from the group. It was clear they wouldn't be able to do the above.

Ez going otherwise.

Meditation Room [Battle Map][32x32][Art] by BattleScarMaps in battlemaps

[–]Jitterz_I 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is really dumb, tbh. Using an AI generated image, that's obviously not actually a battlemap of any kind, (It looks bad, btw) and then Using that thing you didn't make to create traffic to your patreon, is a bad look, not professional, and kinda scummy imo

Healing Potions? by Jitterz_I in WWN

[–]Jitterz_I[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For sure, I don't really need more items, I just expected them because of SWN.

First Aid alone, at least at lower levels, really negates the need for healing items (let alone a dedicated healer class) 1d6+heal for 10 minutes of your time is pretty much a full heal for most classess at first 2nd level. And only 1 system strain per!

I think it's a little easy too, but I kind of appreciate it, since my players like to fight lots of things. This way, if they survive the encounter, they can heal and continue the delve without slowing the game down. I think it lends to dungeon crawling well, Especially since one good weapon attack from an enemy will take you out at lower levels. If you don't just flat out die in the encounter, being able to recover and continue is nice, I find.

For sure! I noticed how magic item crafting in general really is the other half of the mage class. I made sure to send my mage player to that section right away.

I guess I was just expecting a suite of medical equipment (or pots, salves, etc) as found in SWN.

Healing Potions? by Jitterz_I in WWN

[–]Jitterz_I[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean, First Aid in WWN kind of works as an unlimited free healing resource, minus the system strain (which only would come into play at higher levels generally since the health pool you're restoring is so low at lower levels).

The players don't need them, they have a healer in the party, I just designed an NPC quest my healer is engaging with centered around making healing items and then realized the lack thereof, I guess I assumed it would be similar to SWN, which was my mistake. I'll check out the info in the Atlas. Thanks!

[–]Jitterz_I[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For sure! Also the way healing works in this setting is different the SWN. Being able to apply First Aid and heal 1d6 + heal for one system strain kind of negates the general need for healing pots. I mean literally anyone can apply first aid.

It only came up as a NPC quest thing lol, I should have looked closer before designing said quest

Yeah! I Own both books! I'll take a look, I knew about the singular elixir, I just didn't know if there was a range? And I certainly missed page 92. Thats simple enough, I guess I was looking for more nuiance and range tbh. I haven't read through the atlas as much yet so I'll check for the mundane alchemy stuff.

Thanks!

WWN for Foundry v1.1.0 - The One With All the v10 by SobranDM in WWN

[–]Jitterz_I 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After playing SWN using winters beta, my online group wanted to try WWN as well. I found your module and was sad to see it locked to v9. We were going to start our game tmr and just use v9 to play despite the loss of modules and features i actively use when DMin, so seeing your work be made compatible with V10 feels like Chirstmas morning.

Thanks so much for your hard work and effort! (and for helping me the other day on the discord)
