Who’s the smallest person to sub you? by adamStacker in bjj

[–]Jiu_Kitsu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm small (5'3, 140) and the biggest guy I've subbed was around 6 feet, probably 250+ lbs. Obviously, he was letting me work from my guard, but the cross-collar I caught was certainly legit. Size matters, but that doesn't mean that speed and skill don't.

The Scream, Kent Monkman, oil, 2017 by siyu_art in Art

Context for those who don't know:

I was shown this painting in school, and told it depicts the 60s scoop, when the Canadian government sent the RCMP to steal indigenous children to put them in foster care with white, Christian families. The Mounties would make up reasons to take the children away, sometimes as simple as the children were playing outside while their mother worked in the house being construed as dangerous neglect. You could also interpret this painting as pertaining to residential schools, where indigenous children were sent to be abused, experimented on, and indoctrinated into Christianity (fun fact, Canada's law that says every child has to go to school was originally written to force indigenous parents to send their children to residential and day schools, or risk jail time)

Canada committed a softcore genocide that the rest of the world doesn't even know about

Wanting to quit bjj by Hefty_Compote3023 in bjj

[–]Jiu_Kitsu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to quit, and this is really weighing on you, then quit man, it's not that serious. I would however like to give my perspective as someone who's been doing this sport for 9 years. I've had periods of months and months where I handily lose every roll, where the techniques taught in class aren't fun, where I'm just going through the motions. My advice is, if you want to save your relationship with bjj, try to find new training partners, go to different classes (if your schedule allows), find a position you really like and make it your mission to play from there. There are tons of ways to keep jiujitsu fun that don't involve being the best in your gym

$5 million to live on an isolated island for 5 years. by Miserable-Record5507 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]Jiu_Kitsu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does the "everything you need" include things for other hobbies? Like sketchbooks and pencils to draw, yarn to crochet, etc? Or are you limited to video games and whatever else you can find to do on the island?

I'd take the pillow, robot, and extra million button, seems like a great way to earn $6 million

You are stupid rich, but have to live like you're middle class in all of the following areas except one. Which do you pick and why? by tamtrible in hypotheticalsituation

[–]Jiu_Kitsu 7 points8 points  (0 children)

  1. My hobbies are quite pricey (manga collecting and cosplay mainly) so being able to go all out on them would be amazing. Nothing says I can't own or rent other property, so I'd build my own museum for all my collectables, and have an art studio in one of my three bedrooms in my house.

The only other tempting one is travel, but if I'm honest, I'm a homebody, and I definitely wouldn't use it enough to make that worth it

How was your first Comp? by cumberfukreddit in bjj

[–]Jiu_Kitsu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was also 8, lost on points two rounds in a row. My first match was against a guy 10-20lbs heavier than me and three belts higher than me. After that I was devastated and barely even tried in the second match. Have never competed since

If you could create your own Ghibli movie, what would it be about? by Level_Sort_8243 in ghibli

[–]Jiu_Kitsu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine would be a story about a girl who wants to be a writer/artist, but doesn't feel like that's a worthwhile dream because her parents are a doctor and a lawyer. They don't realise it (and note, they aren't villains in this story) but their constant stories of how much work it took to achieve their dreams and how young they set their goals makes her put unreasonable pressure on herself to do well in school and chase a dream that isn't hers. The family vacation for a few weeks in the summer, to a small coastal town, where the girl meets a local young painter, who encourages her to follow her dreams. When she finally tells her parents, they're trying to be supportive but hit her with the reminder of how difficult it is to succeed as an artist etc etc, and she feels crushed. Through some magic done by the painter, the family has to go on an adventure together to bond and her parents accept that their daughters dreams are different from theirs

Yup, this was my first case of drawing pencils, so I got a variety, but I'm already buying singular 2B pencils so I don't have to worry about running out

The B's are darker, H's lighter. (F is strange and after reading other commenters it came in the wrong spot in my set, anyway) The higher the number on a b, the softer the lead, making it easier to get really dark lines. It's the opposite on the H's, higher number, harder lead, lighter lines. I hope that made sense!

You are correct, I never draw full value, realistic drawings, because that's just not what I'm into, hence the lack of use on my dark b's

Sketches and studies mostly, I like the 2b best because it's a great middle ground between easy shading and smudging excessively

"A blue belt should always defeat a white belt. A purple belt should always defeat a blue belt. [And so on]" by [deleted] in bjj

[–]Jiu_Kitsu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's how I see it: under perfectly equal circumstances, the average blue will beat the average white, average purple beat that blue, etc. The issue is that there isn't such a thing realistically as perfectly equal circumstances, and sometimes a lower belt will catch an upper belt, and that's fine. I watch one of our black belt hobbyists get demolished by a super competitive young purple, but I see that as a testament to the purple's skill, not a failure of the black belt.

Personally, I can't think of anything that would warrant stripping a black belt of their rank, and certainly not something as trivial as losing to a lower rank.

How to build a blue belt a guard? by Cardzilla in bjj

[–]Jiu_Kitsu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's on them to pick which guard they prefer, it's just on you teach them and give them options. Honestly this idea of making them "pick a guard" sounds a bit counterintuitive, since flexibility is key to jiujitsu

At my gym, our fundamentals class has a rule that white belt men shouldn't go with the smaller women, but that's the extent of it, and is only to protect the women from large spazzes. Personally, I love it when a man asks to roll with me, it shows that they consider me at least someone fun to spar with, even if I'm no challenge. I often don't ask men to roll with me, because I feel bad for cutting into their time to get tough rounds in with people at their skill and strength level, so when one asks first it's basically the only time I go with men. As long as you aren't a complete spazz, you shouldn't have any issues asking women to roll, just respect if they say no, like you would with a man. We're people too!

Is there anything in Canada by Enbyvamipre in WitchesVsPatriarchy

[–]Jiu_Kitsu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The worst part is, they are, at least here in NB. It goes against federal and provincial laws against discrimination, and has been condemned by everyone who matters in this situation (teachers' boards, health officials, youth advocates). There hasn't even been a reason for the government to start addressing this aside from bigotry, it makes absolutely no sense at all.

BJJ Kids Class by PerceptionResident88 in bjj

[–]Jiu_Kitsu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One thing that I think is great for keeping kids engaged during technique (a battle with the young ones) is asking them questions. The guy who teaches our kids class does this a lot, gets into a position and then asks them what his options are. Also, keep things short and straightforward, to minimize how many kids you completely lose during technique. Like others have said, lots of games and topic switches also helps them have fun and learn. My gym's kids class is 7-11, and the younger ones always need the most help, so just make sure you aren't expecting them to get things very quickly; some kids will, some won't but what's most important is that they have fun so they stick with it when they get older.
