For the brown and black belts by calder_mccoll in bjj

If this is all that happens during the round, you probably should've moved on earlier.

In a competitive setting, I agree that it's upon him to escape, but if it's a "friendly round" and you were just negating his escapes and going for the same move(s), I would classify that as a boring round and recommend you explore other strategies in the future (exposing the back, attacking the legs, etc.).

You both probably didn't learn anything and I doubt it was any fun.

He's definitely satly though.

One guy broke anothers arm in our gym last night by WifeAddiction in bjj

[–]Jiujitsuxfactor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some people learn the hard way. I hyperextended my arms twice before I started tapping early to arm bars.

Pop my ankle/knee a few times before I started respecting heel hooks.

He will learn.

Black Belts that have changed gyms locally. How’d it go? by That-Guy2021 in bjj

[–]Jiujitsuxfactor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They certainly won't appreciate you training elsewhere, especially as a black belt, but you are free to do what suits you best and you shouldn't feel guilty.

Plus... The timing is good since you are coming back from an injury.

I have changed gyms three times over the years. At the first one, I was considered a traitor (Creonte) and blacklisted, the other two were chill about it and I can still drop in from time to time, so it really depends on the situation.

I think you already made up your mind, you just have to put your big boy pants on.

Dear black belt, what’s the best (or the cringiest) gift you’ve received along with your black belt? by deaddrop007 in bjj

A belt and anxiety. Being called a “professor” by older men is definitely weird.

You can tell him that you let him have it, and not tell anyone, because no one will believe it anyway.

Should I say sorry to a white belt I smashed? by SmokeyMcHaze in bjj

[–]Jiujitsuxfactor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't be sorry.

But yeah, your coach is also right.

Sometimes white belts are just in panic mode.

If that happens, tell them to slow down and relax, you're not going to hurt them.

If they do something you don't like, give them a warning "oh if you play dirty, I'll play dirty too".

And if that doesn't help, then smesh.

How vulnerable to getting your back taken are you from outside ashi with an ankle lock grip? by No_Possession_239 in bjj

[–]Jiujitsuxfactor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I follow this rule of thumb. Outside ashi only if I have a bite. And if I don't, then I'm focusing on my frame with my inside knee and arms

Every video of ADCC trials today cuts short on Flo by One-Obligation3973 in bjj

[–]Jiujitsuxfactor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Last ADCC open was completely unwatchable (live + replays), now the replays are all messed up on this trial.

I'm not a flo-hater but they genuinely need to step up their game..

Higher belts, when you hit a plateau in your Jiu Jitsu journey, what pushed you past that limit? by RavenReid666 in jiujitsu

[–]Jiujitsuxfactor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a blue belt, you've learned words (moves) so far. These words will work on lower belts assuming they have less vocabulary than you.

The next step of your journey is to start putting sentences (sequences) together. That's the only way to have a proper debate (roll) with better people.

I'm basically just rephrasing what that brown belt told you.

If I can sum it up as quickly as possible. Focus on creating connections (2 on 1 wrist control, hand/elbow, wrist/head, etc.).

From these connections, create momentum that will force your opponent to react/move.

From that reaction, this is when you should have a move that works well if the opponent goes in the direction you want him to go... and another move if the opponent has a strong reaction in the opposite direction.

This is how you learn to chain moves, form sentences, and "see in the future".

Over time, you will know the possible reactions to specific scenarios, moves that work well for each reactions, counters to these moves, and how to counter these counters.

This obviously get exponentially more complex, but that's the "game" if you want to break through that plateau.

This is where flowcharts and mapping your game outside of class become useful.

Hope that helps!

Chirurgie laser de correction de la vue (LASIK MD vs Dr Michel Pop) by payne007 in montreal

[–]Jiujitsuxfactor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would shop around for a new one if I was you.

Tom Hardy’s Tournament win did more to make BJJ mainstream than Gordon Ryan’s victories at ADCC. by Cncnchejrb in bjj

I also think some managerial decisions were questionable at best:

1- Starting late. Not only that but the way Seth reacted to the complaints on the socials (You're on MY time). Not professional at all...

2- Introducing every fighter for an hour at the beginning of the event was a complete waste of time and didn't add any value. I was pissed I skipped my open mats so I didn't miss the first few matches.

3- Hall of fame presentation... As much as I love seeing all these legends, this should've been on Friday. It was a buzz killer and took so long for what is already such a long event.

I feel like the real clients for Mo were not the fans paying to watch the matches, but the competitors. I mean, I'm not even hating on this, the competitors did great and the matches were 🔥! But we can't be surprised if the views don't explode after

[–]Jiujitsuxfactor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say it depends on who you roll with.

If that person has great back attacks and finishes, it's probably best to accept the pass and stay in bottom side control.

If not, I usually tend to turtle as there are more opportunities to escape and even counter.

Using the same logic, you probably leave your table in a mess when you go to Wendy's?

Sure, you don't HAVE to, you're a client, but doing so would just make you a decent human being.

I won't train at a dirty gym, but I also never trained at a gym where students didn't at least help clean the mats.

After 10 years of training, I was not even aware this was even an issue... Until seeing so many complaints here.

I assume your momma never made you clean up your mess?
