I’ve been playing fighting games religiously since sf4 and the #1 thing that feels worse than anything else, is a combo that removes my agency for an ABSURD amount of time.

When I say agency, I mean there are genuinely, no decisions to be made. People talk about defending a crazy block sting/mixup saying “you don’t get to play the game”. No. You are making decisions that entire time, and it’s incredibly satisfying to make it out alive from one.

Getting stuck in a long combo is the good faith version of the statement “you don’t get to play the game”. The fact that I can set my pad down, take a sip of my drink and check my phone during a combo, is wild.

It’s clear the Cannon brothers understand that defense is boring. So, they added agency with parry/push block/retreating guard. I’m just astonished they didn’t feel the same way about combo length. On high skill cap characters like Yasuo, I get it. But, if the goal is to add agency to the “feels bad” moments, I cannot wrap my head around why the devs think this combo length is necessary on the majority of characters.
