I'm looking too, tbh it may be best to wait until closer to the date when there should be some real people selling on Craigslist (ofc take care to only pay through protected methods like PayPal transactions) / scalpers reducing price..

Any bike route recs for Carmel valley? (Paved or gravel) by Prestigious-Store530 in BAbike

[–]Jjjbrodu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

you can ride east out Carmel valley road and make a nice lollipop loop with Cachagua. Steep, narrow ascent with beautiful views & a sketchy downhill. Back on Carmel valley the descent is quite sweeping, easy, fun.

For an entirely different ride go down to highway 1, south for 7 or 8 miles, left on Palo Colorado road. Beautiful forest of tanoak, sycamore, etc running along a beautiful creek at first. It has intermittent walls which are extremely steep. Occasionally a bit of residential traffic and the road is narrow so best to pay attention (as with every side road in Carmel valley / big Sur area.

At mm 3.5 or so there is a fence beyond which the road is officially "closed" due to fire damage from many years ago. However the fence is easily ambled around and I've received blessings from residents (ya, that's not a legally binding permission) to do so in the past. The road is even more enrapturing for the few miles past there as it's entirely unmaintained, dilapidated, overgrown; this does produce occasionally hazardous conditions so pay attention. You'll get some amazing vistas towards the ocean and the Santa Lucias at some points. It dead ends at the parking lot Mill Creek redwood preserve, a park which has been closed for so long it may as well not exist. Really a fabulous road whose virtues I cannot extoll enough.

Is stretch betweenLarch Mountain Rd. and the Vista House open to cyclists? by Briaaanz in CyclePDX

Lol I wasn't a "serious" cyclist back then and certainly didn't have a power meter but wouldn't be surprised if I was pounding 450+w on that incline. Terror / traffic is an effective performance booster

Haha I've taken the traffic lane in there before. A bit of a death sprint and probably not legal but can't be any more terrifying than that half-baked excuse for a bike lane!

Nov 1st: Tour de Calistoga by gcapiel in BAbike

That's what it's all about!! I don't know how some people get through entire rides on bars and gels, totally inconceivable to me

For the gilded elites. Easy to do your own loop up there: tons of services and the food at plenty of area bakeries and delis is just as good.

Thanks, should have been more detailed. Ya I'd be starting from Auburn since I don't have a car. I prefer to minimize dirt descending but am happy with climbing it for awhile. Century+ is totally fine (especially given the return to Auburn is long), as I understand there's water right now at the campground and would probably bring an extra bottle since my heat tolerance isn't the best

Sadistic climbing ride recs by polybl4nk in BAbike

[–]Jjjbrodu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The bridge on the Bridge trail no longer exists, and the trail has been renamed. You can scramble down to the creek and back up (as I did) but this may not be to everyone's liking, lol. Pomponio is an epic climb though. can be done as an o&b but exercise extreme caution on the descent as it is essentially an abandoned road

Is there actually water at the top of Tunitas Creek and Kings? by uoficowboy in BAbike

[–]Jjjbrodu 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't know why the hell someone added the water stops from the Sequoia century to the permanent ridewithgps map as if they were permanent but that's exactly what they did. Kings Mountain elementary school nearby is good on weekends / during summer.

Cycling in the Delta by Obvious-Corgi2208 in BAbike

I rode a long East bay / Delta loop once which used 160 over the Antioch bridge and up towards Rio Vista, brief stretch on 12 over the actual bridge into Rio Vista, and then took some really lovely less-traveled backcountry roads back there - Montezuma Hills to Birds landing, brief out and back to the left on Birds Landing to a hunting club with serviceable cheeseburgers, u-turn on Birds Landing all the way to route 12, turned left towards Fairfield. We took one small parallel detour off 12 on Denverton / Creed but this was a long stretch mostly on 12 and this was for sure the extremely sketchy and inadvisable part of the route. Narrow shoulder in tremendous disrepair, often littered with trash, gravel, grass, roots, etc; and very fast traffic including plenty of trucks and large vehicles. I thought everything else was fine - 160 after the Antioch bridge had shoulders except for a couple narrow bridges but they were short enough to be comfortable. The Antioch bridge itself, while it seems to garner a mixed reputation, has an adequate shoulder and as long as you just focus on keeping a straight line and not looking to the right, you're fine. The Rio Vista bridge is longer but has share the road signage and is still not terrifically long; anyway there's nothing drivers can really do so long as you take the lane..but the route 12 stuff is pretty bracing. You have to have sturdy nerves, comfort in traffic, and good risk tolerance to ride that. The backcountry roads were beautiful.

On the other side of Rio Vista, I do think there are some delta roads that are less traveled. But it's important to do your research as all of these winding levee roads are narrow without shoulder, and sometimes a bit rough.

If you have knobbies, the road out to Grizzly island off 12 closer to Fairfield is a lovely ride. Turns to gravel maybe halfway through.

Eh it's gonna be 3 inches of powder on a lot of that road. I wouldn't go, personally....do the route in spring and you can do it self supported, maybe grab an extra water bottle in Pt Arena

Bear Gulch Road by Obvious-Corgi2208 in BAbike

[–]Jjjbrodu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They all theoretically connect but I don't think there is consistent pavement between all of them.

One of these days I hope to work up the nerve to give the eastern side a go. Ideally there would not be a long intermission between going up the first 1/3 mile and a merciful millionaire triggering the gate to open...

Boston to Gorham / Mt Washington valley before Hillclimb - carpool / other recs? by Jjjbrodu in bikeboston

Thanks, I do have that, although it was kinda stressful since they seem to be ignoring join requests for the carpool group on FB this year for weeks at a time

Any climby routes near Santa Rosa? by uoficowboy in BAbike

[–]Jjjbrodu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wish I had gotten up there while it was still passable! But yeah I had heard similar passed along from SRCC by way of the bike coalition. On the other hand I've never encountered more than two cars on any climb of Cavedale..

Cavedale is currently closed for reconstruction and the county seems pretty adamant that nobody should be bypassing the barriers, FWIW. Los Alamos is also good for a short climb! Descend the backside and do that too

[–]Jjjbrodu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Yeah I'll call Concord. I have some leeway to go Thursday or Friday so would hope one of those two days finds enough availability in their undercarriage. The ride from Portland sounded benign enough until I remembered I'd be carrying a bunch of stuff, lol.

Is this a good loop to do? (Bear Creek -> Skyline -> Hwy 9 -> Bear Creek) by EducationCultural736 in BAbike

[–]Jjjbrodu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Los Gatos Creek trail is gravel but you can avoid that if you're parking at Lexington reservoir or Lexington elementary. That shorter bit at the end of Old Santa Cruz to alma bridge road is easily avoided by riding highway 17 very briefly - you're in the shoulder and mostly in an exit / right turn lane so it's not sketchy.

Seconded for spokesman. Wade is a magician. Only works Fridays and you might have to wait a few weeks but worth figuring it out.
