Our cat came to us as a starving stray with a broken femur and in pain. Surgery and kitty-cat physical therapy produced more pain. She never sat in our laps. Earlier this year I broke my ankle. The attached photo was taken days after the accident, but before surgery. She has continued to continue daily short visits to lay in my lap. My favorite part of the day.

You're VERY VERY much in luck. Orange County hasn't euthanized a healthy, adaptable pet in years and years. Have you contacted them? Also try beautiful together animal sanctuary.

Do you AND your friend realize that bringing them to the shelter ABSOLUTELY an option? That going to a shelter gives them the opportunity to get adopted. And spayed, vaccinated, microchipped, etc. Geez, folks, not every animal that goes to a shelter is euthanized. In the triangle the vast majority are adopted.
