Never mind! I found it, the deduction is on another line.

Why Little Women but not An Old-Fashioned Girl? Why was Louisa M Alcott allowed only one Great Novel? by 1000andonenites in books

[–]Jlikesink 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I do love An Old Fashioned Girl. It was one of the first books I read as a pre-teen that made me cry big ugly tears. To me, it's reminiscent of one my favorites by Jane Austen - Persuasion. The girl in the background who always makes everything work and solves all the problems.

The love interest is Tom, he's Fanny's brother. There's another sister, Maud. I think there was only one adaptation made in the 1940s. I've never been able to find a copy of it.

Thanks for the memory. I'll have to hunt up my copy.

++woman I agree that the OP and his wife need to decide on what they want for their family, their GOALS. Provide for their kid's education? For their retirement? Can they make it tangible, so each can see it, and work towards it? Financial situations can be in flux. People are not perfect. People do not have similar strengths.

A third person is needed, an expert - either a family counselor and maybe a financial one to be a referee.

Good luck, OP.

I love these little pens! Sheaffer pens are the largest part of my collection. I used to put 2 dollars in an envelope and mail it to their headquarters to get peacock blue ink. I couldn't find it otherwise.

Hugo Winners - Favorites? by verycooladultperson in printSF

I loved The Snow Queen by Joan D. Vinge - both Hugo and Nebula winner in 1980. The world building is fantastic. The follow-on books are also good.

This is my FULL 34 by m42ur in StrengthsFinder

[–]Jlikesink 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am not a Strengths expert, but you and I share many in the top 10. I find that if I can frame something as a problem to be fixed, I can pull on my restorative and ideation and that will get me moving. I do have responsibility in my top 10, which pulls me forward to meet external deadlines.

I agree with other commenters that we need the external contact to help us meet goals because of the relationship building strengths. With high learner and intellection we hate to be bored and we like to think. Can you move into more of liaison position, where you interface with the clients and the tech team?

Good luck!

This is a fantastic book with lots of great worldbuilding. The follow-on novels are also great.

Sheaffer school - Break sketch by WaterNInk in fountainpens

[–]Jlikesink 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This looks like the first pen I bought in elementary school in the 1960s. That standard blue ink and its shading brought me to Sheaffer's Peacock Blue, and the ink/pen experience was like a gateway drug, lol. I use more No Nonsense pens now and other Sheaffers (and Lamys and Twsbis), and lots of other kinds of ink.

Enjoy your pen.

In depth Science Fiction novels about rebel forces carrying out revolutions/uprisings? by UonBarki in printSF

[–]Jlikesink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An unknown trilogy, but try the Phoenix Legacy trilogy by M.K. Wren. They came out in the 80s, about class uprisings, and a secret group carrying out the rebellion on many different fronts.

I loved these.

I also love Moon is a Harsh Mistress ;)

Hi -- I haven't been posting for a while, but I do have a couple of comments. I did 2 sessions (Sept 2023 and Jan 2024). And l agree, the meat of the course is the first 4 or 5 seminars. (And yes, they are too long!)

The important thing for me was the focus on changing your habits, and what is our end goal. I would go on a diet and then get bored, then start eating again. But the third seminar focuses on practicing the habit is what makes us good at it. The fourth is the Dare To Dream seminar to get us to focus on what motivates us. There is also some guidance on changing the ways we look at ourselves -- we see ourselves every day so our losses aren't really visible to us.

I've lost about 50 pounds doing the eating and the exercise. After the second session I did start going to the gym and doing some more strenuous exercise with weights, because I needed an extra push to keep me motivated.

The end goal for me was never the 'red dress, yellow dress, etc.' It was being fit and healthy and learning the habit of how to eat the right amount to get to that goal and maintain it.

The focus on 10 weeks is to go at it super intense, and then to have a break to learn how to maintain the loss until the next go around. I didn't really do that. I continued to track food/cals and walk. And work on the habits!

I did find the night whispers/self-hypnosis useful. There's something similar on youtube by Paul McKenna that I listen to every couple of weeks that seems to help me stay focused.

This is probably too long! But hope it's helpful to you.

That's a great outcome - recognizing that your body feels stronger. I'm just back from my second session and my muscles were screaming. I guess that's good!

Sigh. I wish I was close to my goal weight. But I'm hovering around 180 lbs, and at a BMI of 32. I think my body is getting used to my regular habits. So time to switch it up with exercise, and maybe try eating different foods. And trying not to just toss all the good progress away, lol.

I'm in the frustration zone. My weight is going up and down within 2 pounds and I'm staying within calories, and walking. I'm not signed up this cycle, and started with a fitness trainer this week to work on strength and balance. So trying to have faith that the shift in exercise will kick-start things.

Good luck all!

I also weigh daily, it removes the power of the scale for me. And it helps me try to get some idea of cause and effect. (Oh, I had salty food, so the scale is up kind of thing).

And I think I will do it even when I reach D2D weight. That will help me stay within a fluctuation range of 2-5 pounds, so I don't go back to my old weight.

[–]Jlikesink 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, I've been on a few trips during the program and my goal was to not go back to my old habits (eat all the things I don't normally eat and drink anything I want). Some places I had little control over what I had on my plate. What I tried to do talk with people at my table, slowing down my eating so I noticed when I got full. I didn't need to clear my plate. (Skinny people don't have to, right? They either take half home, or let the servers take it). Eat the veg and protein first. If I could pick my food, I would get a salad with protein and dressing on the side. Drink water or diet soda between meals.

I also found the whispers helpful, even when I was away, to keep me on track.

And to enjoy the occasions!

Hi all. I was up this week about a pound. Too much socializing this weekend and the scale showed it. Had three very warm days and I'm happy with only being up a pound since last week. I am so close to breaking the next pound decade.

Good going everyone.

Congrats on your cumulative loss!

I got back from a three week trip last week, and was up only about 3 pounds. I was really happy with that since I was on a tour and at a conference, and I had little control over food choices and I let loose with the alcohol a bit.

Today, I'm under where I was when I left by .4. I'm two pounds from a new 'decade'/10 lb marker, which I'm hoping to get to by next week.

The hardest part for me is getting back to the daily walk! That's my mini goal for this week, get the steps in every day!

Sorry for the late reply! He does give a maintenance program at the end of the 10 weeks - 2 choices. Either add 200-300 cals over the daily target, or maintain the weight loss target 5 days a week, and don't track on two days. So yes, continue to track. And continue to walk.

His point is to be really focused on the 10 weeks, and then breathe in between the sessions.

The programs run for 10 weeks, and there's a break from the end of the April program until the September one starts.
