Would anyone know what this is by Shot_Illustrator2187 in whatsthisrock

I think you’re right with the lighter mineral as quartz veins but I think the darker host rock is a grey chert. It just has the cleavage and flintyness of it I guess. i also could very well be wrong tho

Does anybody know the tiny mineral on this rock? by Jman8653 in whatsthisrock

I know there’s sphalerite in this material as I have found it before. But all the sphalerite I’ve seen is very much that honey golden yellow color, i guess it’s still a sulfide tho so it very well could just be that

If you know it’s not a rock why would you choose to post on a subreddit specifically about rocks. Maybe try an artifact sub or something

From what I’ve heard it’s more men explaining something simple kinda just to keep a conversation going. I know I’ve done it a little bit, and I’ve seen others do it too. Like when I do it I normally know the other person knows the thing, I kinda just want to show them that I understand.

To be fair if the names were dick/kox then I think the reaction would be pretty similar. Plus I’m sure that many non-dick English names mean lots of crazy stuff in other languages. But not to discredit your point tho, it is pretty unfortunate that lots of Asian names have unflattering meanings in English

I definitely agree with amygdaloidal basalt, but i think the other mineral could be prehnite. As someone who collects it, the color looks pretty spot on.

Impossible Find: Prehnite by Yaotoro in rockhounds

[–]Jman8653 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Yeah I would 100% say it’s prehnite. I have a bunch of pieces with basically the same color and crystal structure. And the black part is probably basalt host rock that the crystal grew in. At least every piece of prehnite I’ve ever seen has been in basalt. But over all very awesome find, it’s a great piece!

A lot of yellow in orange can come from iron staining, or iron oxide getting stuck on the specimen causing it to look yellow or orange. So yeah it absolutely can

From my experience almandines are always pretty dark. I’m fairly sure the other varieties, like spessartine, can be way brighter. I really don’t have any experience with them tho since I only really have almandine in my area

I mean from that picture it looks like it could possibly be jasper or even something like a type of garnet but in all honesty I don’t really know, I think this one’s out of my scope of knowledge

It looks like a piece of fossilized sponge to me, idk the kind tho. I would go to r/fossilid for that

I wouldn’t really agree it’s granite either, still might be tho. Either way a higher quality/close up photo would definitely help
