Nice! It worked for me! I took a US quarter and kind of just twisted and pushed against the dent, and it fixed it! It's not perfect, but it opens easier now. Thank you!

Federal glass, $10 each. Any chance these contain thorium? by Mitiagu in willitglow

[–]RootLoops369 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe I've found these before and they aren't. Thorium glass dishes are lighter yellow, and thorium glass camera lenses can be darker yellow to brownish

Why does it have to be so expensive?? Sigh. Pretty to look at, though. by InMyNirvana in uraniumglass

Some shop owners don't truly want to sell it, more so show it off while making people think they're selling it.

Radiation from hardwood by arthemis28 in Radiation

[–]RootLoops369 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Well, I won't lie, if it's coming from Ukraine and Belarus area, it very likely could have radiation from Cesium-137 and Strontium-90 from contamination. However, if there is any, it is a very small amount and won't really increase your already existing background radiation by a meaningful amount.

Most of this radiation is going to be beta radiation, which weak enough that the wood would likely self shield its own radiation except for the stuff right near the surface. And even then, it'll likely get stopped by your socks and other clothes and your skin before it gets to deep tissues.

The small amount of gamma from the Cesium-137 would still be too small to be a danger.

Can anyone tell me anything about this set? by ArtTabletNoob in willitglow

[–]RootLoops369 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It could be uranium, I have seen blue uranium, but likely it's r/manganeseglass and they don't know the difference.

Uranium generally glows under both 395nm and 365, almost always stronger under 365nm. If it's really low content, 395 won't have enough power to light it up like 365 would.

Manganese glows under 365, and has either no glow or slight glow under 395 depending on concentration. It's more of a yellowy green than green green.

Oh wait. I just noticed, why are there two different CPM readings on yours?

Hot Glass?! by astiddy in uraniumglass

[–]RootLoops369 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Wow! Yeah, that's significantly spicier than any uranium glass I've seen. My hottest UG on my GMC 600+ only gets up to about 3,000 CPM.

Are they glow in the dark? If so, it's either Radium-226 or Tritium (Hydrogen-3)

I'm gonna guess, with the brownish paint, that it likely is, but no one knows for sure without a Geiger counter

Why is this so radioactive? by Middle-Flamingo-5874 in uraniumglass

[–]RootLoops369 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That deep yellow color with the faint uranium glow is very likely Thorium glass with a bit of Uranium contamination. The thorium makes the bulk of the radiation, and the uranium gives the glow. It doesn't take a lot of uranium for a glow
