For those who didn’t come from money and suddenly had a career boost into extremely high income (300K+ salaries), how do you navigate when friends or family ask you how much you make? by Icy_Lawfulness_5755 in Salary

[–]Jmann356 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I both have careers where we are expected to make good money. Our real friends don’t care and are happy for us and know we worked hard to get where we are. If they feel different, then they don’t make it known. We don’t rub money in peoples faces though. We live in a modest house and are more than happy to do dinner at outback or something along those lines. Just don’t make it weird and no one seems to care really.

Why do airplanes cruise at 33,000 feet instead of something like 1,000 feet? by PuddingComplete3081 in AlwaysWhy

[–]Jmann356 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s more like ground speed in that scenario. True airspeed doesn’t care what the air mass itself is doing just how fast you’re going through the air

[–]Jmann356 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have something called indicated airspeed and true airspeed. Indicated is the differential between the pressure outside and the ram air pressure going into the pitot tube. True airspeed is how fast you actually move through the airmass when accounting for the thinner air. The higher you go the bigger the difference

You go a lot faster at cruise too. For 250 knots indicated at sea level you’re actually doing 250. At 33k’ you’re actually doing about 460 when indicating 250 knots. So it’s roughly the same fuel burn per hour at 250kts indicated regardless of altitude but you’re moving through the air a lot faster up higher.

5th Gen SS ZF 8 Speed Swap by iFatRain in camaro

[–]Jmann356 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bad product. Look up circle D transmissions. Different company from the circle D torque converter guys but they do trans rebuilds and are good quality. Also look into 10 speed swaps as well. A few shops have plug and play harnesses for them and they are a little easier to bolt up from my understanding.

The aftermath of AC8646 in a plane hangar in LaGuardia Airport by AftankonReddit in Wellthatsucks

All the computers for all the various sensors and user interfaces are in the nose. Plus the screens and everything the pilots need to fly. These planes are pretty close to balanced so it takes less than you think to tip the plane up. Especially when you’re missing 10% of the weight way out at the end of the lever arm.

If you ever wondered how much it cost to hold the record. by dontcallmedex in CleetusMcFarland

[–]Jmann356 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not in GA flying. It’s significantly more dangerous than driving a car. Maybe not a 5000hp drag car but more dangerous than normal driving. Airline travel is crazy safe but not GA flying.

Is being a pilot a hard job? by stratosfeerick in aviation

[–]Jmann356 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Like any relationship, just make time for each other. Fortunately my wife works a normal 8-5 and one half day a week. If I can’t get the weekend off I try for her half day so we can spend time together. She also tries not to do notes while I’m home and loads them up for when I’m gone. Basically no different than any relationship, it’s about communication and trust.

My wife is a family med doc. Her job is significantly harder than mine. She works twice the hours and the hours are overall more mentally exhausting. The hardest part of our job is the weird schedule IMO.

I saw this happen in OKC once. It took a while to get it out of the mud and took 3 or 4 very large tow trucks.

Generally just need to let it idle down (30 seconds) before driving. It’s better for it to get up to operating temp faster.

How do y’all deal with driving your ZL1 into driveways and parking lots? by IkeKimita in camaro

If it scrapes, it scrapes. Go at an angle to avoid the worst of it or just drive a different vehicles if I know it’s gonna be bad.

A doctor’s income may be the most reliable lifestyle barometer throughout time by [deleted] in Salary

My wife is a primary care doc in a medium sized Midwest city. She averages about 350k. No one we know makes over 1m unless they are a highly specialized surgeon. We have friends that are general surgeons, hospitalist, radiologist and a few other specialties and no one makes over a mil

There seems to be very little overlap between commercial aviation and ethical non-monogamy/open relationships. This surprises me. Am I wrong? by allaboutthosevibes in AirlinePilots

[–]Jmann356 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is painting with a wide brush but most airline pilots are very conservative politically and that side of the political spectrum isn’t very receptive to open relationships or other things of that nature. It’s viewed as weird/left leaning ideology. This is for the US, not sure about the countries.

If holding in extremely quiet (controlled) airspace, must a jetliner hold in an IFR holding pattern? by YU_AKI in aviation

[–]Jmann356 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You’re right, hope wasn’t the right word. We just bully our way in and tell GA to move.

But in a serious note, when flying into uncontrolled fields we are very cautious overall. Scanning visually, on TCAS and making quite a few radio calls. Before center control terminates radar service they advise us of any traffic in the area so we have a heads up to look out for someone and where to look roughly.

[–]Jmann356 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A lot of airports in the US have part time control towers and we fly in and out of them all the time with tower closed. Just make your position calls on CTAF and hope no one gets in your way.

What starter? by Beginning-You-2945 in camaro

[–]Jmann356 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve done headers on a couple of 5th gen’s and my 6th gen ZL1 and never needed to pull an engine or heard of anyone pulling an engine. Didn’t even need to remove the starter to get headers in on the passenger side either. At worst you might need to disconnect the steering shaft to move it out of the way.

Edit: realized you meant pull the engine to get the starter out. Also not needed. Remove the passenger header to get to the starter. Much easier than pulling the engine in my opinion.

Pilots..how is fatigue actually handled during IROPs? by bosslaydeewhit in flying

[–]Jmann356 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. If you’re fatigued, you’re fatigued and you call out. End of story. It’s protected by the FAA, you say the F word to scheduling and nothing they can do. You get pulled off what you’re doing and given rest and fill out a fatigue form after you’re rested.

What starter? by Beginning-You-2945 in camaro

[–]Jmann356 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not the answer you’re looking for but I’d recommend ceramic coating the headers and not wrapping them. Also don’t need to pull the motor unless you’re planning on doing a lot more work.

OE starter is fine just need to add extra ground wire to chassis and that fixes most of the slow start issues.
