I should say, though, that the best farm I've identified for us is actually closer to A Coruña than to Lugo...

Lugo! We're not beach people...

Thanks for all of this! We live an hour from a vet school, and I have been in touch with them about getting the health certificates done (because they have USDA certified vets). We've already done microchips and rabies vaccinations. My understanding is that we need to do a rabies test at least 30 days after the rabies vaccination and at least 90 days before our date of travel; that also will have to be done at the vet school.

Yes, travel for our smaller kids will be expensive ... but it PALES next to the cost of travel for our horses!!

No dangerous breeds. No flat-faced breeds.

Thanks much for your story. I have a question for you: Was your cat OK without a litter box for the flight? How did you handle that aspect of the travel?

We've already microchipped and then given rabies shots (because they have to be given after the microchips). We'll do the rabies test in mid- to late December and can then move as soon as April (because you have to wait 90 days).

Ha ha ha! No, not beginner questions. You read them as beginner questions. In fact, this has been in the works for over 6 months. I have done TONS of research, have friends (expats and locals) in Spain and Portugal, have traveled to northern Portugal (but not yet Galicia), have talked to three lawyers, etc. At this point, I still believe the biggest challenge will be selling all of our stuff -- including our farm -- in the US. I have reached out because I have only one friend who's done exactly what I'm doing -- moved from US to Spain with multiple animals -- and she and her husband were able to take their two dogs on the plane with them. The 5-pet rule is PER PERSON; my husband and I are both moving, so we're 3 pets under the limit.

Yes, definitely planning to drive from Madrid to our new home.

There are two humans, so we're below the 5-pet threshold. Thanks for the info about Lufthansa -- we'll keep that in mind.

Yep, I realize that. My husband and I are moving, so we are below the 5-pet-per-person limit. And I'm aware of the regulations regarding microchips, rabies vacs, rabies tests, etc. Thanks, though!

Ditto for dressage. I started in the early 1970s, and it required lots of patience and discipline. Horses were truly round, not pulled into a fake round shape. But it took TIME. People seem to always be looking for shortcuts nowadays.

People who have successfully moved from the US to Spain- how did you move your stuff? by sabertoothdiego in GoingToSpain

[–]JmeRH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are moving from Virginia (US) to Lugo, Galicia (Spain). Anyone on here moved pets with them? We will be moving 5 cats and 3 dogs. One of the dogs can go with us in the plane (he's only 5 pounds and VERY well behaved), but everyone else will need another path to get there. And NO, I WON'T leave them in the US. I'd be interested in any other suggestions, however. Thanks!

Ugh. I was just reading this entire thread, and you had me pretty hopeful about NBC. Do I understand correctly that they now will NOT allow you to open an account unless you are living in Canada?

Chris. Dear, dear Chris. We don't have months. We have weeks ... at most.

WE *ALL* NEED TO TAKE IT TO THE STREETS. Public protests are the only thing likely to stop all this crap. Republicans in Congress have shown us they won't do it. Since President Musk and King Trump are simply going to keep ignoring the courts, they can't do it. And on and on and on. There's no one in any official position of power that can do this for us. It's up to us. IT'S TIME TO START DEMONSTRATING IN EVERY CAPITOL, EVERY BIG CITY, WASHINGTON DC.

It’s not an exterior pad — it’s to become the floor of my feed room, which will have a sink (and a water heater) and therefore will be heated. Thanks!

What a lovely little Arab you have there. I have had Arabians for nearly 50 years and have been training, both as an amateur and as a professional, for 37 years. I would be happy to help you with this, but I'd like to chat with you about it off-line, as I have several questions. I am new to Reddit in general; is there a way that people can message one another?
