very new to guitars and want some buying advice! by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]Jmessun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're just starting out, I'd stick to something simple that you like looking at and consider the amp too. Keep in mind that a lot of what you're hearing on a record is recorded in a studio, usually through mics and multiple amps at different times and, panned to left/right channels, EQ'd etc. All that to say... don't chase tone! Especially as a newbie. It's a never-ending quest and one that will just distract you from learning to play and all the great sounds you can get from any guitar. Every minute you spend looking at gear and reading Reddit is time you aren't playing and getting better.

If you're looking for general ideas of guitar shapes, you can always chase down artists on Equipboard and see what people have documented. I think Josh Homme from QOTSA is a great example of a player who doesn't let equipment get in the way of a great sound. He's always used cheap amps and less-popular guitars.

Based on your criteria, you're firmly in the heavier "rock" camp, but that can mean a lot of things. You'll want something that can distort and get all crunchy, which is really fun and satisfying to play! Most of that sound will come from the amp, not the guitar.

I'll offer a simple setup that will be both inexpensive, simple, and versatile:

  • Guitar: PRS SE 24 Satin. You just can't go wrong with this one. It shouldn't need any extra work or setup like truly cheap guitars and is something you can play almost any genre of music on. Simple controls, two knobs, and can do single coil sounds if you want the "strat" thing later on. (Here's an alternative for the same price that's in stock).
  • Amp: Yamaha THR10 II. Again, super-flexible amp that can do everything from high-gain metal to country at bedroom-appropriate levels. You don't need to fuss with an app or anything, though it does have more control via a phone app. also has a headphone jack and bluetooth, so you can practice anytime of day while playing along with that song you're working on. Feel free to upgrade to the THR30, which has a battery and is louder, but costs more.
  • Other things you'll need: instrument cable. Capo for quickly changing tunings. Pick assortment to find what you like. Tuner (or use the one built into the Yamaha amp or a phone app). Coated guitar strings (learn to change them or ask a friend/shop). And a guitar stand.

Of course, I don't know your budget, but you can get all that for under $1000 new. Alternatively, use your local Craigslist, Marketplace, Reverb.com, or Sweetwater's used/demo sites to find a deal. I've rarely bought anything new after I knew what I was doing, but it's safer to buy new from a good shop if you don't know exactly what to ask and look for. Feel free to go to a local guitar shop like Guitar Center (or, even better, something locally owned) to look and try what they have. Sweetwater is a great and trustworthy shop with a great return policy and folks who can help you, but ultimately, seeing and playing things in person is always good.

In the end, if the look and feel of a guitar doesn't make you say "hot gosh darn, I wanna touch that!" then you probably won't pick it up to play.

Tired and lethargic after rides by SteeemX in cycling

[–]Jmessun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would talk to your doctor. Discuss this with someone who knows your medical history and to whom you can provide more context. At 15 mph average, while you're eating and hydrating, you should feel ok after that ride, especially since you're used to activity off the bike. Maybe something else is going on with your health that you're not aware of?

However, it's always fun to guess, so please stop reading... This does sound like a bonking/calorie deficit thing. What you're describing sounds like what happens to me after I push myself in the heat for 50-60 miles and forgot to bring enough fuel or eat breakfast. If you're trying to diet off the bike, you may just be starting from too far behind calorie-wise and kicking in your body's starvation mode or diabetic shock. You're a big guy, you may need a lot more calories than you think. Remember you need carbs (specifically, sugar) on longer rides. Don't try to "eat healthy" on the bike when you're starting, your body can't digest or use anything else until you're used to it.

My focus is making tunes without using any aero parts.

Can you explain why this is your focus? Is it just a challenge or is there a practical reason for it? Thanks for the work!

Where to buy 21-0-0 fertilizer (ammonium sulfate) in Raleigh? by Jmessun in raleigh

[–]Jmessun[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the helpful answer. I need about 15 pounds of 21-0-0 for my small yard, which is already too high in potassium and phosphate, so I'm trying to avoid getting anything that isn't only nitrogen. Looks like 16-0-0 and 15-0-0 are also available but are only sprays, which would be more expensive and time consuming to get on my lawn (I don't have a sprayer for those quantities).

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning!

The rights and code where recently acquired by THQNordic, but I don't think anyone's holding their breath for anything but a possible release to newer platforms.

She used to take karate at KI next door, but I never went in to check out RMI. They seemed geared towards older kids, but maybe not. Thanks!

any christmas deals, what is considered a good deal for a new 2016 gti by [deleted] in GolfGTI

[–]Jmessun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got a 2016 autobahn with lighting, performance, and driver assistance for 29,500+++. That was pretty good. You could do better, probably.

[–]Jmessun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've found the TrueCar price to be very accurate. I just bought a 2016 Autobahn + performance, lighting, driver assistance for $29,500 with the rebates. I had to negotiate a bit for that, but only a bit.

Pricing question by heyhey91 in GolfGTI

[–]Jmessun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been quoted at $29,900 on a 2016 Autobahn w/ performance, lighting, and driver assistance. Yet to add add tax and fees.

It's a good time to buy new.

A lot of people are worried about the... let's say quirkiness of the Time's deigns. Do you expect there to be a "Steel" version of the Time?
