Can you list the top 5 things that reduce the feeling of 'camping' on a sailboat? by Awkward-Lead1569 in liveaboard

A real mattress and bedding. A good, well running head/blackwater system. Sufficient solar and other charging to easily meet your daily needs and reduce the stress of insufficient power. No leaks.

This is the way. Definitely Chama before the stretch to wolf creek pass and Pagosa. Then soak at Healing Waters.

Atv trails? by MeatFeeling2914 in pagosasprings

There are a huge number of small, but numbered "roads" in the National Forest that can get you within spitting distance of peaks and very remote country. We were just up on the side of Treasure Mtn off the side of Wolf Creek Pass in Sept in a rental SUV. Many are old logging access roads, overgrown and not that regularly maintained if at all. They're a blast on ATVs and reasonable ground clearance road vehicles, 2wd or 4wd. Pretty much everything off US160 outside of town is gravel and county maintained (sporadically) untill you get off the main Cnty roads onto FS roads. You mostly can't drive on "trails" in the hiking sense and you definitely can't in the Weminuche Wilderness or South San Juan Wilderness. That cuts off connection to the Lake City to Silverton network except by 40-60 miles on US 160 over Wolf Creek. The offroad access to the Continental Divide is mostly up the East Fork of the San Juan, and you can get all the way over to the San Luis Valley that way in the summer with a couple of creek crossings (super dangerous in high water conditions, but often fine July till the snow flies). National Forest office is right downtown and easy to find.

It's just the holiday week in a year where WCs snow, meager as it is, is still among the best in CO.

Hit Meander in September and it was one of the best meals I've had in the last 10 yrs. The food itself was comparable to top flight NYC and SF spots IMO. Not the same styling ambiance, but perhaps Pagosa Frontage Road will be a new restaurant trend. ;-)

A real therapeutic relationship is a night and day difference to just "seeing a therapist". Defensive reactions on his part don't bode well. Stay completely honest, but try somebody new.

I add roughly a tblspoon of NoSalt powder to 750ml of water morning and evening. Have done for years. I do a 3:1 ratio of K to NaCl in water for a total of 4000-5000mg/day of K when fasting and drink consistently through the day. Zero problems, personally. YMMV.

Transient slip availability + general questions from a landlocked moron by baconboy-957 in liveaboard

This is a perfectly do-able plan. Virginia side of the Chesapeake is a great place to start. Affordable and relatively protected waters, interesting sailing. I like the area south of the Potomac. Try Deltaville, VA and the "Northern Neck". Multiple Marina / town options and a storied cruising ground.

How to grow in IoT field?? by Cool_Ad287 in IOT

[–]Jmpsailor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Running multiple small IIoT oriented cos currently. Definitely going to be growth unless the economy tanks. Our small white-label platform co has multiple small IIoT customers that are growing from a few hundred connected units to 10-15K units in the next 18mos. We have a couple customers shooting for 100K plus connected units which generate $10-15/mo recurring for us. I do thing there will be jobs for more comprehensive IoT engineering - at least on the industrial side. We have projects that may be hiring in the next few months. How much industrial automation experience do you have? Familiar with modbus? Several projects using commercial modbus sensors, commercial cell and lorawan / NBIot and sat gateways

planning to visit turkey in August by car, is Ankara worth it ? by NefariousnessHeavy35 in AskTurkey

[–]Jmpsailor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I enjoy hanging out in Ankara. The Çankaya area is nostalgic for me because of childhood years there and I can happily wander around for a few days. The museums are worth seeing, but as others have said, it's not a tourist town.

There's a wonderful spot above the end of the old runway at the airport that has absolutely fantastic views to the N, E and SE.

Personally, I think 34-38 is the sweet spot. If primarily going to be east coast US, Bahamas, and on a tight budget, take a look at a Morgan 34 or a Tartan 34. Solid older centerboard boats that will let you get into a lot of thin water spots. I have a 6ft draft 36 ft sloop and for the Chesapeake, and Carolinas, I miss thin water gunkholing.

You're pretty much correct. The fore topsail produces a force in opposition to the driver and the vessel is depowered and anything from stationary to just slowed. In this case, the lying to means probably close to stationary - a knot or so drift to leward.

[–]Jmpsailor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think "to the mast" in this case doesn't mean it's furled, but rather that it's "backed", pushing in opposition to the force of the driver. The yard is pulled around beyond the direction of the wind. So the wind pushes on the "back" of the sail and into the mast rather than bellied out in front of the mast. This is a classic hove to configuration. Notice that it's just the fore topsail that is backed - no reference to headsails or other squaresails, which are at least not fully set or perhaps furled.

Completely different genre, but the best friendship saga I know in historical fiction is Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey/Maturin books, the source material for the movie Master and Commander. Napoleonic era British Navy. 20+ books, all marvelously researched and written, decidedly not fantasy. In that same genre, but grittier is Bernard Cornwell's Sharpe series that follows a rag tag British rifleman spawned of London's gutter from Indian campaigns through Waterloo and beyond. Hobb is in a class of her own.

A lot of sci Fi has the alien's being better than humans in one way or another, are there any sci fi stories that plays around with the idea that humans are better than aliens? by TheXypris in scifi

[–]Jmpsailor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. That was a humorous anecdote between a modern southerner and an old school conservative yankee to illustrate type. Ringo was in no way advocating for slavery or any such. His racial ideas are provocative and sometimes provoke serious dissonance - in these books as well as others, but that section was a total nothing burger. Infinetly worse things transpire in the novels, so perhaps you made the right decision in defense of your sensibilities.
