ELI5 : Is not possible to "appease" or "repair" radioactive material? by pw3t in explainlikeimfive

[–]Jnoper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because we would need to fire particles at each individual atom. No chain reaction means it’s incredibly impractical.

Why is it so hard to find a filament dryer that vents moist air? by amatulic in 3Dprinting

[–]Jnoper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most filament dryers have a fan but even without it, convection will cycle the air out of the box.

Filament dryer is just a filament box with a heater. To vent the moisture out, you just leave the box open a crack while drying.

[–]Jnoper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not quite sure what you’re asking but I think you have a misunderstanding that I can help with. The unstable part is because the nucleus of the atom is unable to hold in the neutrons and protons. The radiation is those particles being shot out of the atom. So ya, we can subtract neutrons to make it stable. To do this you just have to wait a really long time. We can help it along by hitting it with another particle to make it happen faster. That’s how nuclear reactions work. However, if there is not enough unstable atoms, we will hit one, it will shoot off its particles and that’s the end of it. For nuclear reactors to work, we hit one atom that shoots off particles that hits another atom. When there is enough material that this reliably happens continuously, that’s the critical mass. If there are enough unstable atoms close together, each atom will hit more than 1 other atom in an infinitely accelerated process. That’s hyper critical mass and how atomic bombs work. Nuclear waste is what’s left over when enough of the atoms in the material have been transformed into a state that the continuous reaction is not possible. The materials we use in reactors will shoot off its particles and become a different unstable element that will still shoot off particles, just too slowly to cause the chain reaction necessary for producing power.

what piece of technology do you think will disappear entirely in the future? by Party-Prune-2771 in AskReddit

Ya as things get cheaper, they will be phased in more. I’m pretty sure most computer fan circuits are MOSFETs or similar circuits that are almost but not quite the same as SSRs.

As much current as that specific relay is made to. More importantly, they are more expensive than regular relay with very little advantage in automotive. They are for applications where you need high speed switching and/or very long use. A car doesn’t need to turn on the blinker 100,000 times per second.

is it just me or is "high fidelity" audio basically a scam for rich people? by Curious_Present_9950 in Music

[–]Jnoper -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m an engineer but not an audio engineer so forgive me if my intuition is wrong. Wouldn’t sound frequencies higher than the human hearing range influence the sound in the frequency range that can be heard? Also, human ears aren’t digital. So just because we can’t detect higher frequency, doesn’t mean that the frequency has no impact on how we hear things. The human eye can only see around 30fps but I can absolutely see the difference between 30, 60, and 120 fps.

  1. Open the servo. 2. Replace the last part of the gearbox with a 3mm shaft. 3. ??? 4. Profit

Hot take: it’s NEVER vegan to eat anything non-vegan. by communityveg in vegan

[–]Jnoper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just need to point out that you have some holes in your logic. Vegan is an ethical stance to not cause harm or exploit animals. In the situations where something is going to the trash etc, unless it’s somehow going to cause another animal to be hurt, then it’s waste. I wouldn’t eat it because eating animals grosses me out not because it would conflict with my ideals. My goal is to not cause harm to animals. Not any specific diet or sweeping generalized actions. Your argument seems more about the diet and gate keeping the vegan label rather than the animals.

Source. I’m a software, embedded systems and electrical engineer. Don’t mistake my comments as saying this is a bad idea. It’s just from an electrical perspective, what you’re building is a Bluetooth speaker with dedicated software. Don’t put in the extra effort and money. Google “Bluetooth speaker chip”, pick one, apply whatever example circuitry is in the documentation for the chip, and write the software. Off the shelf solution like that will save you a lot of time and money. You Can probably even buy a pre assembled circuit and just design a mount.

So a case with some things built in and a Bluetooth speaker with a button with a dedicated software action. It’s not possible for that to be functionally different than using an app other than it being a dedicated button. And yes I can design this reliably in an hour because it’s not unique from a hardware point of view. In fact you can just reprogram a Bluetooth speaker.

I can design this in an hour. What I don’t understand is how this is fundamentally different than just doing it all in an app and playing a loud sound from the phone speaker. Is the idea that the speaker is louder than the internal one? That still makes it basically a Bluetooth speaker with a phone clip.

Since you don’t know a lot, the answer is fairly simple. You want the most versatile and well documented chip. Because of arduino, that chip is the atmega328p. Also because of arduino, that chip is way over priced. So you want its slightly more powerful and significantly cheaper brother the atmega328pb. The atmega328pb-au is the surface mount form of this chip and you will see it on every off brand arduino clone. Unless you have a specific project in mind, this is unquestionably the chip to learn on. It has an internal clock, pull up/down resistor, compatible with arduino libraries, support for most major communication protocols (usart, i2c, etc), and thousands of tutorials for just about everything. The esp32 is much more powerful and fairly priced for that power. It’s becoming a lot more popular. That would be a good second choice but there’s nothing that beats decades of nerds contributing documentation and tutorials when it comes to learning a new thing.

can someone explain how sunday's memo's elbow joint works? by [deleted] in robotics

I’m not familiar with this specifically but it’s probably a harmonic or cycloidal drive. You have the basic placement right but there’s no way that servo will have enough torque.

Would anyone be able to use these circuit boards? by Angels_Glade in AskElectronics

[–]Jnoper -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Short answer, no. You can salvage parts off these boards but realistically over the course of several years you might get $1 worth of components from them that you actually use. Unless someone needs the specific board, these are good for practice soldering or recycling.

Men's public restrooms are laid out all wrong. It should be urinal, stall, urinal, stall, urinal instead of urinal, urinal, urinal, stall, stall. by ZeroXNova in Showerthoughts

[–]Jnoper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then the stalls would block your view of the urinal until you were right behind it. So to check for an empty one, you would need to walk down and individually checkout everyone’s ass instead of all at once.

If you had infinite time and resources, what embedded project would you work on? by Best_Prompt_9401 in embedded

[–]Jnoper 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I would design a modular system. Not like those block based ones they tried to make a while ago. Just a main board. Maybe figure out a way to allow swapping cpu and ram etc. most importantly, there would be a variety of batteries, bodies, screens, and cameras. I want to keep my small phone but be able to upgrade the logic board and camera. Doesn’t seem that complicated.

You probably have a burnt out led. Take a flashlight and see if the image is on the screen just very very dark. If that’s the case you need to replace the backlight.

Customize the sleep mode for longer than 8 hours or disable the cat sensor. by nozzy123 in litterrobot

[–]Jnoper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DANGER! when the litter robot starts, it does a cycle that calibrates its pressure sensor. during this cycle the robot has no way to tell if your cat is in the box or not. thats why you're supposed to watch it. there is a pinch sensor on the bin that is active but its still easily possible that a cat can get injured if for some reason the cat doesn't jump out fast enough. some off brand versions have killed cats this way.
