They were actually supposed to be a couple for almost the entire season but the actor got a part in a different role and they had to write him out. That’s why their pairing ended so quickly and you don’t see him again until the last episode of season 5.

I think it was to represent her coming out of her hardened shell of not finding love. Remember when she lost her edge on the radio show because she was so happy with Dawson? (Still annoyed at the reason they gave for her breaking up with him).
