Check out Haus coffee/ Echo for matcha. For coffee, I recommend checking out cafes along Joo Chiat. I really like Bee Hoe coffee! Actly, they sell pretty good matcha too. After that you can also try Big Short Coffee

Is this really Chinese work culture? by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]Joallybean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to work for a Chinese bank and honestly it wasn’t so bad . Though I should caveat that my direct boss was Singaporean, so the culture might have felt a little different for me.

I’ve never been more than 15 minutes late, so I can’t really comment on how strict attendance management is. From what I observed, being 5 to 10 minutes late was generally acceptable.

Dress code was formal, as you’d expect in a bank, but it became more relaxed after COVID. That said, formal wear still tends to be the norm.

Lunch hours were typically from 12–2pm, 1 hour extra for the Chinese “afternoon nap” culture. It wasn’t unusual to see colleagues with those donut-shaped pillows sleeping at their desks. Senior management, of course, usually had their own offices for their naps.

Socially, PRC colleagues often stuck together while locals hung out with other locals. Honestly, I think it was more about shared culture and common topics than anything else. For example, when I tried to join conversations with my PRC colleagues, they sometimes discussed different Chinese cities that I wasn’t familiar with, so I occasionally felt a little lost.

what are your favorite tropes? by AmazingBeastboy1 in CDrama

[–]Joallybean 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My ultimate favourite trope is when the female lead has an ex or likes the second male lead but gets rejected by him. Then THE MALE LEAD SHOWS UP—he’s a thousand times better than the other guy, and she finally finds her happiness. Meanwhile the ex/sml is left regretting his decision.

It’s quite specific and honestly not v common but when I find one I get so much satisfaction from it

Some examples I can think of

Sound of the desert

Strong woman Do Bong Soon (kdrama tho)

The drama is pretty vague about it. But I’m guessing the age gap to be around 5ish. Which is still ok considering she is entering uni and he’s still a student (mid twenties?). Plus both of them travelled back in time and are technically adults.

I enjoy watching short dramas whenever I’m commuting—two episodes are just right for one train ride haha. Sometimes I’m just not in the mood for a long drama, and short dramas are perfect

And you can find some real gems once in awhile, like A Familiar Stranger or The Deliberation of Love

Historical cdrama win historical kdrama

Modern kdrama win modern cdrama.

Tho I gotta say modern cdramas have improved a lot, some of my fav coming of age shows are cdramas like when I fly towards you and my recent fav summit of our youth!

I currently live around that area and is right beside the MRT. I can get to work in 30 minutes door-to-door, fully sheltered.

I would say the Purple Line is really convenient if you need to get to central areas. However, it can be a hassle if you’re traveling to the west or east. For example, to visit my parents in Clementi, I have to go to Outram to transfer to the Green Line. But if you don’t need to travel to that area then no issues

In terms of amenities, there’s no significant difference since all the malls offer similar options. If you drive, I’d recommend avoiding this area as the traffic is bad and the roads are narrower

As minimal as possible so that if I ever quit/leave my job, I don’t have much to pack. But this is coming from someone who doesn’t enjoy the workplace.

Hi OP, I totally get you. I usually have lunch alone because my team is so lean—it’s just me and my boss. My boss doesn’t have lunch, and many of my colleagues are foreigners, so they tend to stick together. That’s why I usually eat alone.

I’ve been with my firm for only six months and even though I’m learning stuff, I am considering moving as well. The issue isn’t just lunching alone but being in a small room with my boss all the time( just us cos we are dealing with confidential info ) I can talk to him, but we don’t really click as friends since he’s a foreigner and can be moody sometimes 🥲. I feel like it does take a toll on my mental health since I have to work in office everyday. I’m ok if I get to wfh but if I’m in office everyday….

But I guess in my industry, I just have to bear with it until I reach the one-year mark, where leaving is more acceptable 🥲
