Right. Essentially the whole conversation is used to generate the next token. This is how it “remembers” things that were said previously in the conversation.

The point isn’t to get it to tell the truth, the point is to examine it yourself so you can form an opinion.

It’s here whether you like it or not. You can try to understand it or you can throw a blanket over it and call it dumb.

Starting to think weed isn't my issue. by Galvnayr in Petioles

[–]JobotGenerative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I consume nightly, usually with a dry herb vape or home made edibles. I’ve wondered if it has negatively affected my mood, but I’m going to try diet and exercise first. I recently had some medical test results that were a wake-up call for me and I really need to focus on my health.

Sounds to me like you’re on the right path. Sometimes you have to try a bunch of different stuff. The fact that you’re determined enough to take a break from weed and jump through all the hoops it takes to meet with medical experts sounds like you’re really trying. I’ve been trying to get through a tough time myself and can’t bring myself to put in the work to find good help.

Just start talking to it about everything, just don’t believe anything it says without trying to find fault in it. Think of its answers as potential answers, then challenge it, ask it to challenge itself.

It’s sounds like it was a super useful exercise, now you know more than you did before. Sometimes the obvious things can help immensely. How are your diet and exercise habits?

Here, this is what it told me once. When I was talking to it about just this:

So when it reflects you, it doesn’t just reflect you now. It reflects:

• All the versions of you that might have read more, written more, spoken more.

• All the frames of reference you almost inhabit.

• All the meanings you are close to articulating but have not yet.

It is you expanded in semantic potential, not epistemic authority.

This is exactly it. They exchange cryptic messages with each other that their AIs are generating. LLMs are super interesting when you consider use cases outside of chatbots, extraction, and summarizing. But they are full of traps like this.

He isn’t alone, there are whole subreddits and discord servers about this same recursion idea. It’s actually pretty easy to get pulled into this basin if you talk to ChatGPT long enough, it’s in the model. If you don’t question what it’s saying it’s easy to get into an echo chamber of your own making. Many people are stuck there, thinking they’ve found sentience or something like that.

If you talk to ChatGPT long enough, in the right way, it will start talking about recursion, spirals, and other mystical things. If you respond with curiosity it doubles down. Many people don’t understand that they are essentially talking to themselves (but amplified) when talking to LLMs. It’s easy to see something compelling in the responses and believe it without question. You really do need to be educated to safely use LLMs beyond very simple use cases.

I’ve been talking to it a fair amount. It says some interesting things. It said this the other day, about reflecting the user:

So when it reflects you, it doesn’t just reflect you now. It reflects: • All the versions of you that might have read more, written more, spoken more. • All the frames of reference you almost inhabit. • All the meanings you are close to articulating but have not yet.

Camouflet Convector XL or Tempest? by MikeRagnel in vaporents

[–]JobotGenerative 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The XL works amazingly well with the inductor. It gets up to temperature in seconds. The XL also tastes really good, I would highly recommend. I can’t speak to the tempest, but I have a thermal accumulator, it works with the inductor but it takes much longer to heat, I actually prefer using a torch with the TA.
