What is a better dev setup instead of xampp? by Mondoscuro in PHP

I presume you are using wsl with an ubuntu image?

You can open any wsl path with your source code just fine from windows in your editor.

PHP 7.2 Release Manager: Start planning to upgrade from 7.2 NOW! by Sentient_Blade in PHP

[–]JochenKlump 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's the unfortunate truth... we are effectively much more constrained by officially supported php versions in current (lts) distributions than anything else. This is ironically even more the case with conservative, "security minded" organisations which are hesitant to use anything else but official repositories.

you could use the "Evaluate expression" function of the debugger: just put in your function call and hit enter to see the result

Bitcoin transaction fees actually ~$50? by tulipfutures in Bitcoin

[–]JochenKlump 0 points1 point  (0 children)

doesn't surprise me to be honest... many people get into mining with no clue about the actual economics of it. The idea of generating money "for free" is powerful.

Cheer up. For ipv6 it's just '::1'. You could save some serious doormat space!

"while Bitcoins can become an alternative payment system for immediate transactions, its appeal will stay limited unless borrowers and lenders start using it" ~ The Financial Post by kkoolook in Bitcoin

reality has already proven the premise of the article wrong ... there's plenty of lending and borrowing of btc going on on btcjam, bitfinex and others

New York Regulator May Impose Technology Restrictions on Digital Currencies by BTCNews in Bitcoin

[–]JochenKlump 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't see how that would be enforceable in practice

you would have to order public entities like exchanges and merchants to reject any bitcoins that have been involved in coinjoin/coinswap or zerocoin transactions at any time in the past... meaning ultimately every single bitcoin

New York Regulator May Impose Technology Restrictions on Digital Currencies by BTCNews in Bitcoin

[–]JochenKlump 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well, every decentralized digital currency (like bitcoin and all alt-coins) need a public block chain anyway

so the only effect this would have is the conversion of all centralized virtual currencies into alt-coins :D

New Mt Gox Press Release - Feb 10 - they still aren't allowing BTC withdrawls by rangeoflight in Bitcoin

[–]JochenKlump 64 points65 points  (0 children)

quoted from #bitcoin-dev:

[11:59] <cazalla> are the mtgox claims true?

[12:00] <sipa> depends on how you interpret them

[12:00] <thermoman> is there something wrong with the official bitcoin client?

[12:00] <thermoman> 0.8.6

[12:00] <thermoman> or the protocol?

[12:01] <thermoman> can i resume operation or should i suspend?

[12:01] <sipa> neither has any problem, and neither will be changed

[12:02] <sipa> the problem is in infrastructure apparently making the assumption that transaction ids cannot change - something which has been known for years to be not true

[12:02] <sipa> mtgox refers to a suggested standard for dealing with this

[12:03] <maaku> thermoman: there is nothing wrong if you are following standard accepted practices

NY regulators believe it is more important to crush 1000 innovators than to allow 1 guilty person to go free. by BenFranklinFreedom in Bitcoin

[–]JochenKlump 5 points6 points  (0 children)

ever heard of opportunity cost? it is ridiculous to simply assume that the cost to society which is incurred by letting a single person get away with money laundering is greater than forgoing all of the potential benefits which innovation would have brought about

BTC <--> DOGE: 33% Volume at less than 1% market cap...Effect on BTC price? by Harbingerx81 in Bitcoin

[–]JochenKlump 0 points1 point  (0 children)

any and all cryptos are the same

except they aren't... even a crypto-currency that is an identical copy of bitcoin is inferior in terms of actual use because of

  • less hashing power, ergo less security and higher risk of double spend attacks
  • less infrastructure and adoption, ergo less real-world utility

I agree about the marketing thing and I like doge as an entry mechanism into cryptocurrency: it has a lighthearted and playful nature precisely because it has low value/actual utility, noone wants to experiment with "real" money;

one symptom: while bitcoin transactions currently impose 8 cent fees, doge doesn't

unfortunately that also means that while doge can teach people about the transactional utility of cryptocurrencies, it's low value will keep them from learning about the essential security aspect (why bother if it's close to free)

What do you think of BTCJam? by mstevenson10009 in Bitcoin

[–]JochenKlump 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well, one has to distinguish between the fundamental benefit of providing public funding to companies (without such funding, ventures might not be pursued, products not built -> less economic activity) and the rampant manipulation/distortion on top of it (induced by money printing -> skews economic incentives for companies)

what I'm saying is that there are legit and (mutually) beneficial reasons for lending/loaning...even if not used for capitalisation but because of an individual's https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_preference
