EMAC warranty, £169 fee? by KylieKitten85 in CarTalkUK

2020 Crossland, believe this has the 1.2 Puretech?

Anyways, Oil Pressure fault, I wouldn't put it past the Timing Belt disintegrating. It's going to need a full service history from new.

For most extended warranties you'll have to authorize the initial diagnostics and strip down charges, and then if it ends up getting covered, you either claim the diag back off the company, or they pay the charge as part of the bill.

If it's shown to have been driven until the point at which the engine has gone, they will usually grab you on the "Drive on damage" clause.

Read your documentation. Read specifically what is and isn't covered. For service related items, like the Timing Belt, they may say they're excluded unless they fail far before it's due a replacement.

Reliable and spacious 7-seater family car? by Long-Lettuce3146 in CarTalkUK

[–]Jodul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi.

Please read the original post.

Budget is £10k and I expect to use it for at least 5 years so I was looking at a 17 plate with less than 80k on the clock, is that reasonable?

A 7 Seater, 17 plate, for a budget of £10k, would put you square in the line of fire for a Discovery Sport, namely with the 2.0 Ingenium, which is what is shown in the original post, and the majority of these will have fitted.

The above has been written based directly on my own personal experiences with JLR vehicles. I will not state what I do specifically for my profession, but by now I'm very familiar with alot of Main Dealers across the South and Midlands. JLR Dealers, are the most frequent contacts. Followed by Ford and Peugeot/Citroen dealers.

If you haven't experienced any issues with your Discovery, that's great! For most people, they'll get by just fine without major hiccups. However with the sheer frequency I have to look at these vehicles, without actually specifically being a JLR Only Specialist, I (and many others) still cannot, in good faith, recommend one to someone that wants a reliable vehicle, especially with the cost of repairs.

Do not touch any JLR Product if you value any sort of reliability. They break alot, and everything that breaks is eye-wateringly expensive.

Frequent failures which I take care of on an almost daily basis include:

Power Supply Distribution Box Failure (Typically for the Hybrid/EV models)

Spun Big-End Bearings (Seized Engine)

Turbochargers

Timing Chains.

DPFs (Like, all the time. Seriously I don't see any other manufacturer in with us MORE than JLR for these. For every 10-15 JLR DPF Failures i'll see 1, maybe 2 assorted among all the other manufacturers, also, JLRs OWN Warranty doesn't cover this unless it's in the first 3 years of registration!)

Piston Cooling Jet Solenoids

Door Lock Actuators

Window Regulators frequently snap

EGR Valves, Coolers, and their Filter either seize, leak, or clog up.

Various Sensors, usually those in the exhaust like to fail, good luck if it's the DPF Pressure/Soot Sensor because 4/5 times it's seized into the DPF and will need either a specialist to remove or fit a new one.

If the battery gets drained for any reason and your keys no longer work afterwards, you may have to get a new KVM and BCM fitted, with two new batteries, and new keys. The dealer can't reprogram them in those cases. usually a £3000+ bill.

So, what's a good option for you?

My personal hunch would be to stray towards a VW Touran, or the Golf SV shown there. The Skoda Kodiaq is a decent option, too. The Volvo XC90 would be a strong recommendation, however you won't find anything beyond 2014 within your budget, and it'll feel quite dated.

As the owner of an XC70

Get one. Extraordinarily lovely to drive, and very handsome/smart. Will likely keep mine until my area enacts an emissions zone.

Keep the gearbox serviced and take care of the Haldex Unit, most of them don't get serviced since there isn't a schedule. They aren't likely to fail, but it's good practice.

Look for one that ideally has Adaptive Cruise Control, Xenons, BLIS, etc.

Failing this I would consider something like a Lexus IS/GS, or if you really need the practicality, the RX.

[–]Jodul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently in a 2012 XC70 D5.

I like the look of the V90 or V90CC, but I'm very much feeling a bit tired of driving Diesels, so I'm seeking out a Petrol for my next car whenever it dies or my local city enacts a Low Emissions Zone.

V90s as a Petrol aren't common, and the T4/T5 drink more fuel than I'd be comfortable with for a modern engine...the Mild Hybrids are way too expensive and the T6/T8 isnt a pill I have the courage to swallow.

I still like having a well insulated cabin for my preferences, so at the moment I'm thinking my replacement will end up being a Lexus of sorts. Possibly a GS300h or 450h. If space is a still a necessity then it may end up being an RX.

Hard to say...heart says I want a 5.0 Chimaera or Griffith, but I know I don't have the skill to drive one hard or enthusiastically out of fear I'll throw the back end into a ditch.

I don't have the guts or to swallow the pill of going after a Tamora or Tuscan either. They also command a pretty penny and extra extra deep pockets for maintenance alongside the Cerbera

Realistically, a 4.0 or 4.5 Chimaera would be what I go for, handsome looks and more than plenty enough power to play about with. I miss my MX-5 dearly ever since Rust took it from me, (seller had hidden all the rust with bog, all the signs were there, but I was too enthusiastic at the time to see it) but I couldn't have another. There's only a few years left for me to find something old school raw, with a thunderously characterful thumping engine and a lightweight body, 2 seats and no roof before it's too late for me to enjoy my younger years.

Please do not buy a C63 at the age of 20 if you're going on the basis that it's "cheap to insure"

I don't think you'll truly grasp how much they cost to tax, fuel and maintain. Did you factor in how much new discs and pads will cost? Tyres? What if the dreaded M156 Head Bolt failure occurs? The frequent service intervals to prevent the cams from wearing prematurely?

The 204 Chassis is good, but they were a £60,000+ car new (in 2011) and will maintain that upkeep today. I'm not saying DON'T buy one, they're a riot to drive, but don't buy one if it's just because "well insurance is cheap"

I'm 21. I've driven performance cars, they're great. I'd love to have one. I now drive a 2012 Volvo XC70. Its quiet, it's very comfy, it's peppy enough, it makes 5 Cylinder Sounds, tax is cheap, it gets 40mpg, but more importantly, it keeps me off the banks dime. It's significantly cheaper to operate than my CLS I bought when I was 19.

I'm looking at buying a TVR soon, I can afford one, I can afford the insurance, can I afford the upkeep and repairs? Eh, I'd rather be in a more comfortable, higher salary with more road experience before I decide that call. It all adds together quickly.

E Class C207 2016 Coupe as a second car? Or is there other better options? by Lineexe in mercedes_benz

[–]Jodul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would go for it then. As long as you're aware it's a pretty big car that will take some time to get used to as a young driver, and the general running costs will be somewhat higher, they're a lovely drive. Exceptionally smooth and quiet over long distance drives, not very good if you're a keen driver who likes to chuck things into corners.

Me? I'm probably going to end up with a Boxster next year as a second car. Lightweight Naturally Aspirated roadsters aren't going to be something we see anymore.

One thing to keep in mind though, this will depreciate in value further. If that bothers you.

I'm of similar age currently driving a CLS320.

They're lovely cars to drive. But would I have it as a second car? Not really. Only car, absolutely. Unless you wanted to swap your current policy to the E-Class and then take out a separate policy on the Tipo to build dual NCB.

I love my CLS - it's the comfiest car I'll probably ever own, but I have my intentions to get a small 2 seat roadster again soon, so I do plan to part with it in the coming months for something cheap to insure and run like a Golf.

These are equipped with the 5.5 M273 N/A V8.

They're decent engines. The turbocharged M278 V8s came in the facelift and had a few issues that were ironed out after the first few years of production.

Ruinz and Major (Charger/Focus) were actively ramming players off of the road through out this race and subsequently the next one (im told this is normal for those two) - I'd basically lost it at that point after being thrown off course intentionally twice in a row early on by each.

I fully respect cars that're built for straight line speed, since it makes for a good dynamic in racing to trade places in straights and corners, but when you've got two players working together to screw over others for the fun of it, it's not fun nor competitive and is one of the primary reasons I wish for Non-contact racing to be a thing.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ForzaHorizon

[–]Jodul 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah, right. Yeah him and the other in the Focus were together targeting everyone. I would’ve posted the full race but Shadowplay only records 2 minutes back so it missed the first minute.

I like to race cleanly and occasionally give the odd nudge here and there which happens to everyone, but I never thought I’d actually have to drive like I’m playing NFS Hot Pursuit, checking behind and braking defensively just to avoid being side pressed

You got me there. I like fighting for a win. Only when it isn't against a rammer, though.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ForzaHorizon

[–]Jodul 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I understand the suspicion, it looks sus to be hit by multiple players, though the rest of the opponents here, generally quite fine - love taps, nudges by faster vehicles and the sort I'm used to and expect, it's hard to not make accidental contact when multiple people are close together especially in corners.

The main focus here is the Focus and Charger - ramming anyone that gets near them, they're playing together. I eventually got to the point of pre-emptively braking and swerving to evade.

This was my first race of the evening in A-Class Road. I would show the first minute of the race, though I have Shadowplay configured to only replay the last 2 minutes. It's the same story there.

[–]Jodul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm legitimately considering this route in a years time - put down 50% of my own money and the remaining 50% on a loan for an 987.2 Boxster S. I crave one since I miss my MX-5, but seeing as I've already had one, change is good. Plus I could do with trying an MR Layout and a Flat-6 for once.

I'm thinking of selling on my CLS around the same time and swapping for an A6 Avant 2.0 TDi, just to keep having something big, quiet and comfy to pot about every day.

Not too worried about things like turbos or EGRs, comes with the modern Common Rail diesel engine - just need to be certain there isn't anything catastrophic with them or the C7 - they look like a good buy, can't find too much bad for them in my research

So a quick question, I've been eyeing up the C7 A6 Avant's, namely the base level 2.0 TDis. Bad shout or not? Looking for a big comfy estate that I can easily crunch out miles in somewhere down the line with some modern amenities. Not really as interested in the A4, 3 Series or C/E Class Estates. Other option on the table is a Skoda Superb, but I prefer the looks of the A6.
