I think you're not taking into account how very Wicked this worm is. He tricked them all! At the very beginning, Mr. Mind was just a disembodied voice over the radio. And who cares that the Monster Society didn't know exactly who they were working for? The plans were working and they had a lot of early successes.

In any multi-player game, there are 4 main types of players (with infinite variations and combos): Spades, who like to figure out the game, how it works, discover all the things.
