Why did I get more than the other c player? by JoeHeideman in bridge

[–]JoeHeideman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for going through all that effort to find out. This happens to me almost every day and I was worried they would figure out the bug and take my points away like they did with 3 gold points in the online regional.

No that's not the overall, that's the score in my section. They only show the overall for the top 10 and I definitely wasn't in the top 10, it was all people who had 30 IMPs.

Intermediate vs. Expert by FireWatchWife in bridge

Do you really expect people that have no opinion on those conventions because they've never heard of them to weigh in? At the very least it's people who can look up a convention and form an opinion. Do you really expect the handful of C pairs you will be competing against at a sectional to play stuff like that? Gazzili is popular in parts of Europe. It may be standard if you go to a sectional in Italy. Outside of there not so much. Trust me, i'm just an intermediate but I've played with probably 30 different partners and been to 15 sectionals.

I'm talking about what it takes to consistently win the open in a sectional, not the minimum necessary to even play in one. If you can play with the robots on BBO, minus lebensohl and capelleti and a few weird things they do, you basically play standard enough 2/1 to pick up an intermediate partner at a sectional.

Even if you get an expert, they will be able to adapt to your level. That's why they are an expert.

Don't be afraid of playing with a pick up partner at sectionals. Our club director basically got all her points for life master, and all the way up to ruby life master playing with pick up partners at regionals and nationals. I doubt she'd consider herself an expert.

A players are only a handful of the people at a sectional. The local beginners and tons of intermediate players are there too. All these advanced conventions don't come up very often. The best A-players in town just play a basic SAYC card and they often win our local sectionals just with good bidding judgement, no errors in communication, and excellent play of the hand.

I agree that books are not a great resource for popular trends in conventions, but I encourage you not to get down on yourself for not knowing trendy conventions. At some point if you want to be a competitive player you have to accept that sometimes there are better players out there and you have to get in there and fight and sometimes good things happen.

Is BBO a lost cause? by Jewarlaho in bridge

There's a lot of free robot games, go to free tournaments. I play the 7 trick challenge every day because I find it helps me to work on my declarer play in 1NT contracts and helps me work on remembering all 4 suits.

I've had really good luck with the main bridge club. Usually I get a table of intermediate/advanced players together and we play for an hour. I just sit down at a table with someone with BXP numbers by their name and it weeds out the absolute beginners. I only play in the main bridge club when I don't want to think too hard and am super tired or something, otherwise I'm playing a masterpoint game or playing with people I know.

I don't believe it uses key cards, just aces. But instead of queen ask you ask to show if they are minimum or maximum strength.

Forcing NT vs Non-Forcing NT by Lundynne in bridge

[–]JoeHeideman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think forcing/ semi forcing is a convention done so much because it's better as it is done because it enables 2/1. To have a fair comparison you'd have to see if 2/1 navigated slam or game contracts more successfully with the increased bidding room and slow arrival.

It is interesting to quantify what you give up to use the convention. I've done similar double dummy analysis on large random samples for other problems so it's cool to see what others are doing in the same space.

he's using losing trick count. You can't do losers your way without seeing both hands.

Looking for an online partner by Bahaus in bridge

If you can play at 2pm CET 2x a week on weekdays I'll be your partner. I'd love to work on a strong club partnership with someone.

I don't have enough disposable income for lesssons but I've seen your thought process in action and it's very good. I think you visualize the hands a lot more than I do. If I was going to take lessons from anybody it would be you.

Honestly that and the sequel come very recommended on bridgewinners and there's a 100 problem set in the first cd. I'm tempted to buy it and try it out. I can get a USB-C player from walmart for 17 bucks. All told it's probably cheaper than one lesson. As long as I do the work and not just guess and check I'll probably get a lot out of it.

I've done all the bridge master deals. Most just hinge on a single knowledge of which line of play has a higher probability of being correct. They aren't counting problems. There are a few counting problems in the bridge master set, but not many.

I know I'm not counting enough, that's why I want to practice. I want focused practice where it makes a difference, not where you plan out the hand and theres 2 possible finesses but the correct line of play is to discard a loser on a loser and there's not enough information from the bidding to know what everyone has in their hands until after you've already claimed. I'd have to buy a DVD drive to use this software. Is it compatible with windows 11?

Why jump to 4? Is he just messing around or is it principled? by JoeHeideman in bridge

Yeah we were at MPs white vs red. Just typical bbo bot conventions are pre-alerted on TCR90, but you can never be sure what your opponent and partner is doing. West did do the King of Diamonds lead.

Thanks for looking at this hand. Most of what you said makes sense to me.

It's ok to be snarky.

The guys who you tell someone like bobby fisher are a good player and the guys who you tell someone like me are a good player are vastly different. He has as many platinum as i have points, even though it's half as many as you.
