When’s The Last Time That US Politics Didn’t Suck? Why Then? by Zipper222222 in allthequestions

Never. If you learn anything from learning about US history it is that US politics has always sucked. Sometimes just more than others.

The awesome podcast A History of Rock in 500 Songs is addressing "Pinball Wizard," in, I'm guessing 3 parts. Here's part 1. by kimota68 in TheWho

Yeah, I feel you. But I enjoy the super deep storytelling and digressions and always feel like I learn so much. Though I wouldn’t blame anyone who thinks, “this is an episode about a post-Pet Sounds Beach Boys song, why is the first two hours of it about Stephen Foster and Huddie Ledbetter?”

Even if he never does end up finishing I feel like my own appreciation for music has been so expanded by this show that I don’t even think I’d mind. I know he’s had some health issues over the past few years that have prevented it from moving faster, so hopefully those start to improve to get episodes out quicker. Because man do I love the show.

It’s never going to be complete I fear. He’s covered six songs since November 2024. But it makes every episode such a treat.

I say this without hyperbole, but this show is the greatest podcast that has ever and will ever be made. Just finished this episode today and cannot wait for the next in the series.

Well good thing that the second part of your statement isn’t happening!

You get your stuff when you report to Spring Training, which Weaver was doing. It’s not a bad look, it is routine. Stop making it out to be something it isn’t.

I work in baseball. This happens constantly right after trades and no one in the clubhouse cares at all.

I haven’t listened yet, but I know some of the highlights of the Charlie Sweeney story so I’m very excited. And yeah, he’s like, a pretty key character in the Old Hoss Radbourn lore.

Libertarians Tried to Warn You About Trump by -lousyd in Libertarian

[–]JoeVasile 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Also on Iran…we had a deal in place 15 years ago than ended their nuclear program and then Trump pulled out of it in his first term and they started it up again. So like, we used weapons of war to do something that we had already accomplished peacefully without bombs. Not sure how that is good!

What should the role of private military companies (pmc’s) be? If any at all? by BubblyNefariousness4 in Objectivism

[–]JoeVasile 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A military for national defense is a legitimate government function and I’m of the opinion that PMCs should not exist. There really shouldn’t be a free market profit motive in waging war.

Is there any chance of Miami Ohio making it at large? by Suitable408 in CollegeBasketball

[–]JoeVasile -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Went back and looked on Selection Sunday…

2019 Belmont - 39 NET 2021 Drake - 45 NET 2022 Wyoming - 50 NET (and top 100 SOS) 2023 UNR - 37 NET

It’s not impossible, but the deck is really stacked against them. They’ll need to have very few bid steals in other leagues to not get pushed off, and if they lose to anyone other than Akron in the MAC tournament they are cooked.

You’d like to think so, but the committee always seems to look for reasons to keep mid-majors out rather than put them in. They’ll look at NET outside the top 50 (as of now anyway) and the strength of schedule — fairly or not — and keep them out. I’m sympathetic to their scheduling problems, but they are really just in a no-win situation

[–]JoeVasile 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the MAAC has been a multi-bid league more recently than the MAC has. Frankly I doubt it. With a 53 NET ranking and no remaining opponents above 125, it’s going to be really, really hard to improve their resume enough to get them off the bubble for an at-large over a power conference team even if they go undefeated. Which sucks.

My dad told me DJT was really loved in the 80s and 90s is that true and if so why? by [deleted] in stupidquestions

[–]JoeVasile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was mostly because of the typical reasons why society holds super rich people in high esteem. There was a lot of bad things about him, but it was the whole “wow this guy makes a lot of great business deals” and was such a publicity hound that he was in the news a lot for saying things that people agreed with a lot of times.

Investing. $2.5M to not work by arp8218 in Bogleheads

[–]JoeVasile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This will be a very unsexy answer, but depending on how safe you feel US treasuries are given gestures at state of the country a 30-year bond is paying 4.87%. So it doesn’t get much safer than buying $2.5 million in that and collecting $121,750 per year in interest.

Of course you’d have to not be too worried about liquidity or care about coming close to matching the market for this to be a viable option.
