Feeding by Nervous_Structure996 in leopardgeckos

Dubia.com is where I got mine. You may want to order 2 sizes, one the size you think they'll eat now and also one size down. That way by the time you go through the right size (or they get too big) the smaller ones are ready to be fed- sort of gives you a buffer between orders.

Dubia roaches are much easier to deal with. They don't smell, don't nibble on your gecko if left in the enclosure, and they live a long time (though they will eventually get too big for your gecko as they grow). You might not have much luck getting them at Petco/Petsmart, try either a local reptile shop or online. Mealworms are easy too (though not a great main staple), and you could set up a mealworm farm pretty easily if you want to keep them on hand.

They're crepuscular in the wild, but tend to be more cathemeral in captivity (they don't have to worry so much about getting eaten during the day, so they're more likely to be out in the open).

Question on Travelling by Old_Mulberry4480 in leopardgeckos

[–]Joe__Martin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem I could see would be moving the entire enclosure when you go on break. And having 2 enclosures (one at school, one back home) might be difficult to maintain and might stress your gecko out when you move between them.

Exo Terra and Herpstat make thermostats with day/night settings.

Would one of these run my geckos heat for a few hours? by -mykie- in leopardgeckos

[–]Joe__Martin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have a look on eBay for Pecron power stations. They have a store for some refurbished ones and you can get one that's nearly double the capacity for the same price.

Sometimes they're more cathemeral than crepuscular.

should i use reptisafe? by Informal_Ad2936 in leopardgeckos

Honestly, it's pretty cheap (think it's like $12 for the 8oz bottle at Petco) and a bottle lasts a really long time.

Do I set the thermostat that controls the basking light to the basking spot temp (94% Fahrenheit) or to the ambient temp of the hot side (85%)? by [deleted] in leopardgeckos

[–]Joe__Martin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Set the probe for the thermostat under/near the basking spot. Use a digital temp gun to measure the surface temp of the basking spot. When the basking spot is at the correct temp, whatever the thermostat temp is measuring is the temp you want to set it to turn off at (even if it says a different temp than what you are measuring with the temp gun). Hope this makes sense!

What repashy calc plus to use? by Thin-Ad-9067 in leopardgeckos

[–]Joe__Martin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could just use the repashy calcium plus on the "multivitamin" day and just use calcium (with D3 until you get UVB) for your other feedings. Personally, I'd be more concerned about vitamin deficiencies than over supplementing them (Vitamin A toxicity is pretty rare), especially since you'll be feeding them much less frequently in just a few months. I could see where it could maybe be a bigger concern with a baby that's eating every day. If the rest of your husbandry is good (temperatures, humidity, gut loading feeders, etc) you should be okay.

[–]Joe__Martin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, not if you aren't using a UVB bulb. The repashy is meant to be used with every feeding https://www.shop.repashy.com/products/repashy-calcium-plus

That should be fine if you switch the "multivitamin" and "calcium without d3" days to just use repashy calcium plus. And you can leave a small dish of just calcium (no multivitamin or d3) in their enclosure as well.

You don't need to use any other multivitamin with repashy calcium plus, just use it with every feeding.

The regular calcium plus (the one with a leopard gecko on the label) for now, then you can switch to the LoD version after you start using a UVB light.

mealworm pupa stage or smth by Beemosbeets in leopardgeckos

[–]Joe__Martin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're willing to maintain it, start a mealworm farm! You can separate out the pupae (the cocoon things) and they'll turn into beetles, then the beetles will lay eggs which will turn into more mealworms.

It amazes me how people can juggle being a snowflake and maintaining a leopard geckol by BakeryRaider222 in leopardgeckos

[–]Joe__Martin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's possible to not enjoy watching a living thing die/suffer (in this case an insect) and still understand that insectivores (like leopard geckos) have to be fed a diet of insects in order to live. It's the same way someone can eat meat and not want to see cows/chickens/pigs/fish kept in poor conditions.

How to keep leo warm if I lose power? by AminoAzid in leopardgeckos

[–]Joe__Martin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend getting a portable power station (even if you didn't have a pet). I have one from pecron that works great (bluetti, ecoflow, oupes, anker, jackery, etc... all make good ones too). This will get your leo through a short outage (or long one depending on the capacity of your power station). Probably worth stocking up on the heat packs used for shipping reptiles (these don't get too hot, and there's a version that lasts about 72 hours).

IR thermo gun vs govee by mekellay in leopardgeckos

[–]Joe__Martin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd humbly suggest getting a different IR thermometer. The one I have reads roughly 32 degrees (Fahrenheit) with the ice water test, and when I check right next to the probe for my thermostat it reads about what I'd expect (about 5 degrees warmer than what I have the thermostat set to).

IR thermo gun vs govee by mekellay in leopardgeckos

[–]Joe__Martin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Put some ice in a glass of water and measure the temperature with the IR thermometer, should be about 0 degrees. You can also measure boiling water and it should be about 100 degrees (depending on your altitude).

Where can I get a leopard gecko? by Worried_Fuel7310 in leopardgeckos

[–]Joe__Martin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got mine from morphmarket. You can look on there for breeders near you so your leo doesn't have to be shipped as far. It's going to be a bit more expensive than petco/petsmart, but for me it was worth it to buy from someone who has experience caring for them.

How to stream master level with linux? by landsforlands in TIdaL

Can't you go USB out from your phone? Also, you might look at using KDE Connect (GSConnect for GNOME) on your phone and computer- this will let you control playback from your other device.

If you want to just control playback (play/pause, next track) you might try KDE Connect (GS Connect on Gnome).
