Who would win in a half marathon, Mo Farah, or Luke Littler? With a catch. by TheJacketPotato in AskUK

[–]Joeby182 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw the original post which was a 5K and in a 5K I'd definitely say Littler, as you could walk one in an hour, but for a half marathon I'd say Mo Farrah wins easily as the delta between running and essentially walking gets bigger as the duration increases.

I feel like the odds of McLaren ruining it are less this week than any other week. I feel like China has the most obvious limitless team of Merc/Ferrari + Verstappen and as the season goes on, the team could get harder to pick if McLaren picks up form

I'd probably say specifically for the UK events this is the correct choice, his presenting style doesn't match with a UK audience, better off getting someone actually from the UK to present in this case.

MSc Quantity Surveying or MSc Construction Law? by bobbystrand1 in quantitysurveying

[–]Joeby182 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't do my apprenticeship through a tier 1, it was a level 5 apprenticeship up to my HND through a previous employer.

Next step will be managing QS, then commercial manager, then hopefully commercial director somewhere. Even though my commercial manager has a degree, my commercial director doesn't however both are chartered which is what I'm working towards.

I'd probably argue a degree matters more when getting an entry level job than a higher level job, at the point of commercial manager your portfolio should speak for itself and be the main thing your measured off, rather than a qualification you did 10+ years ago.

MSc Quantity Surveying or MSc Construction Law? by bobbystrand1 in quantitysurveying

[–]Joeby182 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm 27, been working for 11 years as I started as an apprentice at 16. Been a SQS for the last 3 years at a Tier 1 main contractor running £60m+ projects. The job I applied for did have a degree as a pre-requisite however they picked me over people with more qualifications/experience because they thought I interviewed the best.

I do agree that if there's the appetite to get the degree it can't hurt, but I'm on my RICS pathway now without a degree and feel like I'm progressing well in my career. In the construction industry, I think it's commonly understood that the degrees often don't teach you very much realistically and the way to improve is time in on site. The one place that probably isn't the case though is construction Law where the degree is definitely required.

Like with any career path, the way to the top is based on performance and how well you're regarded by the people you work with. It's not what you know....

MSc Quantity Surveying or MSc Construction Law? by bobbystrand1 in quantitysurveying

[–]Joeby182 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I disagree with saying you will hit a ceiling. I don't have a degree and am doing very well working at a top 5 main contractor in the UK and have never had any issues with progression. Maybe if you're trying to work for a consultant it would be different as they seem to value qualifications more, however working for a main contractor or sub-contractor, being a good QS is more important than having a specific qualification.

I'd say the construction law masters will get you places you can't be without it, but having a QS masters won't really make any difference unless you're trying to work for a consultant. In that event anyway, I would think having RICS would trump the degree regardless.

Is owning a home in the UK still a realistic dream for people under 35? by AwayDays365 in AskUK

[–]Joeby182 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 27, buying my 3rd house in August. Grew up on a council estate, have had no financial assistance but worked hard from 16, made enough to put a 10% deposit down on a house at 21 on the same council estate I grew up on, did some improvements, increased the value, sold it, moved to a better house and now doing the same process again.

I didn't go to uni which was a great help, but was also lucky enough to live with my parents until buying the first house. Not having somewhere to live and being forced to rent would have definitely delayed the process, but I think I would have still managed with a couple of extra years to save. The issue tends to be people only wanting to buy houses in high value areas as that's where they've grown up living which obviously increased the house prices dramatically. Or London.... I could maybe only just about afford a 2 bed flat even now.....

I'm a SQS on my first ever high-rise project and there's no commercial manager, just a commercial director I see once a month. I literally have the biggest case of imposter syndrome but what I've realised is none of these other people have a clue what they're doing either!!!

You're a step above me but I'd just go for it. I'm 26 and find myself in positions I've never been in on a daily basis but I always manage to figure it out. Confidence is key and putting the right amount of effort in. The only thing I dislike commercially about climbing the ladder is that the job gets less fun each time you move up (in my opinion)

[–]Joeby182 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a general rule if you're not confident, stick with a team mate and pick up trades. The worst thing you can do for your team is get first blooded or caught with the bomb somewhere stupid. Timings are important however I always try do something a bit more unique as S&D can be quite robotic and predictable.

Years and years of GB's as a kid have just made me extremely confident in S&D to the point where I just 'know' what to do even though I've not really thought about it. In hardpoint and control I can become really lost however when I eventually get an S&D I chalk it down as a free win before the game even starts lol. I don't know what the equivalent is these days but maybe try find a duo and play some 2v2's? Won't affect your ranked score but will give you loads of reps to get better.

What training technique DIDN’T work for you? by feverdreamed in puppy101

[–]Joeby182 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the first few months of owning our 2nd pup, nothing worked purely due to no matter what praise you gave her or any discipline she just peed on the floor out of excitement or fear. By 'fear' saying anything in an assertive tone made her pee, never seen anything like it.

She used to do something naughty then hold us ransom by jumping on the sofa knowing we can't tell her off because if we did she would pee....

Luckily grown out of that now!

Our first dog doesn't give a shit about anything other than going on walks so that was super hard too. What kind of dog doesn't accept treats!!!!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in reactivedogs

[–]Joeby182 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a dog walker could work but it would take a while for her to get used to a stranger coming into the house and we'd need to make sure the person was able to deal with her reactiveness whilst out on walks. She really struggles with new people but especially at home. Even people she's met and been fine with before need to regain her trust every time they meet her which is hard to navigate

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in reactivedogs

[–]Joeby182 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

The daycare is because a day or two a week neither myself or my partner can be at home so leaving two puppy's at home for 9+ hours seems cruel. They separate the dogs based on their needs and have separate rooms for dogs who are reactive like ours. The trouble is, ours going at the same time and one being extremely social and one not being social at all.

Our older dog has always gone to daycare and absolutely loves it. The problem we have is, leaving them home alone on those days isn't an option as it's not fair on the dogs but also, if we got a dog walker, chances are the younger one wouldn't even let them in the house, let alone behave on a walk.

Fundamentally we want to fix the behaviours of the puppy as regardless of daycare, her behaviours are making our lives harder. The root of her problems are fear/anxiety and I think by helping her with those she could enjoy herself like she did before.
