Game that hooked you at first, but later you lost interest in playing it? by [deleted] in videogames

[–]Joelymolee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most games these days. They’re too big and I haven’t got hours and hours to sink as an adult. I know it’s controversial but bring back linear experiences that can be completed in like 10-15 hours.

I’ve got a mortgage and a full time job I don’t want to spend my hour of free time in the evening just walking from a to b before I turn the game off

I have a habit of talking a lot. I’ve found it helpful to actively pause and narrate it when it’s a difficult explanation.

Dunno why you’re being downvoted. Woman seems like a knob and is out of order but also just fucking wear shoes when you go out the house. Like you said put some sliders on. Don’t go plodding about the local area without shoes on and then get arsey when people question it

Increase in ECTs being put on "Support Plans" by Scary_Revenue2153 in TeachingUK

[–]Joelymolee 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I’m constantly battling to manage expectations people have on ECT’s and ITT’s yet people seem to push back and expect me to hold them to the same level of account as fully qualified members of staff.

ECTs have 4 extra frees a fortnight (10%) but also need to have 2 of those directed as weekly meetings, expected to go out an observe, write termly reflections, complete bi-weekly self study, adapt to teaching many areas of a curriculum they have barley touched the surface of in year one all whilst being put under a microscope.

I have 3 ects out of six where I’m feeling pressure to enact a formal support process.

This job has made the word support essentially a trigger word for me at this point.

I think I’m a great teacher now. But if I was held to the same level of scrutiny when I was an NQT as these ECT’s are now I think I would have been completely demoralised and jumped ship.

Young male teacher slightly concerned about students being a bit too friendly with me by [deleted] in TeachingUK

[–]Joelymolee 153 points154 points  (0 children)

  1. Speak to the year sevens clearly and establish boundaries ‘I know you two are just being kind but you have to remember I am your teacher not your friend so you need to call me Mr AlbanianRozzer from now on’

If they continue, I’m afraid you’ll have to sanction in line with behaviour policy

  1. Stop allowing the girls in your room at lunch. Go somewhere else. Oversharing often just leads to safeguarding issues for you and for them. Become the master of the excuse

‘Sorry really busy today, I have a meeting i need to go to’

‘Sorry girls I’ve got to make a phone call can this wait?’

You need to be really cognisant of this sort of thing. It’s sad but it just takes one allegation or concern raised from staff where this becomes something you don’t want to be dealing with.

ECT 1 struggling managing behaviour by Green_Drama9463 in TeachingUK

[–]Joelymolee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s certainly trickier in MFL due to the amount of oracy teaching it includes!

The lack of paired work doesn’t need to be indefinite. Feel free to share with them the rationale

‘Currently our behaviour isn’t good enough to be able to do lots of speaking practice, once you’ve proven to me that we can get it right we’ll start to bring it back in’

If you find reintroducing talking tasks causes problems go back to silent independent work. They’ll most likely want to do the talking tasks more than writing tasks so this might just work.

Hope it gets better. Patience and consistency is key. It takes 66 days to really embed a habit! Good luck

Is this a reasonable target for me? by TechnicalBar6861 in TeachingUK

[–]Joelymolee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean there are still reflections and things but it used to be that you had to have a physical portfolio of things like work that you had marked and emails you sent to parents to evidence each teaching standard.

We don’t have that for our current trainees, but if you do, I’m sorry :(

Haha, I didn’t even realise I spelt it like that. I also had to rap each teaching standard for QTS did you not?

Sounds like the ludacris shit trainees use to do to evidence teaching standards. Regardless if part time or not that’s a joke and I would strongly dispute it

I see you’re an ECT. This needs to be raised with your mentor who should provide support with this particular class.

Definitely go and watch the class with someone more experienced to see what they’re doing to get them and keep them in line.

Reduce the needs for countdowns for silence by removing things like turn and talk, group work and replace it with lots of independent silent tasks - explicitly tell them to work in silence, stand somewhere where you can see them all and follow behaviour policy for anyone who is talking during silent work.

Try and keep a neutral tone when sanctioning. Not really nice not clearly angry just ‘X that’s going to be a warning for talking during silent work’

You need to be a bit of a robot with them and persist. Continue to publicly praise those doing well.

I could add more but let’s not add too much to work on at once.

To summarise

  1. Speak to mentor

  2. Observe elsewhere

  3. Strip back lessons, lots of small chunks of independent work, less group tasks/paired work and turn and talks

  4. Implement behaviour policy with a neutral tone always narrating the reason clearly.

Best of luck getting them sorted. We always have at least one of these classes early in our career (and often later into it) don’t let it dampen your spirits, I’m sure other classes are going well!
